Just making my usual appointed rounds. I check the Baseball Discussions, Minor Leagues and Transactions sections every day.

I'm off to Philly tomorrow. We'll see how Mr. Baker uses Lawton, and I'm most interested to see the flurry of moves that will be needed when Wood, Williamson and Nomar come back. Should be interesting.

hey Bruce, any chance at all the HoopsCubs may be correct in the idea of Macias being DFA'ed? We're all keeping our fingers crossed that it will be one of the upcoming moves this friday.

What does happen and what should happen in Cubdom aren't always the same thing. My guesses _ and they're just guesses at this point _ are that Cedeno will be optioned, Wuertz may be optioned so that he can work on stuff and Remlinger may be designated for assignment. The Cubs probably wil argue that Macias can play third base.

Say it ain't so, Bruce. Say it ain't so...

If you come back this way Bruce, do you think anyone in the organization is sweating the Farnsworth/Mazzone union? With Sisco having established a pretty good year for a pretty bad team (despite his mind-numbing BB totals) in KC, Mercker as the only one doing a thing on a bad Cincy staff, and Farnsworth already having a solid season, do you sense any uneasiness with discussions concerning the pen by management?

Remlinger DFAed? Really. Dusty seems to like him a lot. Although that Grand Slam yesterday didn't help his cause.

I think it needs to happen. He is not getting the job done and Dusty doesn't know how to use him.

Bruce may very well be right about Remlinger.

Remember that when the three walking wounded are activated, someone will have to be removed from the 40-man roster.

Grieve has been mentioned, but they may wish to keep him around past September 1st as a pinch-hitter.

The only minor leaguers that are in even theoretical danger of being removed from the 40-man roster are Richard Lewis, John Koronka, and Jon Leicester.

Of those, only Leicester will be out of options next spring and my bet is they still hold out hope for him. Lewis has been awful this year, but they may want to give him one more season. Koronka may be needed in that Iowa-starting-pitcher-at-the-ready role next season.

If it were up to me, I'd deroster Lewis and keep Remlinger.

i have nothing against that. I just find it real hard that Macias would be DFA'ed.

On the bullpen issue, I think the Cubs may be a little skittish about the Farnsworth/Mazzone pairing. But on the other hand, Farnsworth is going "home" to Georgia, and that's not always a good thing for a player.

Really, it wasn't going to work anymore with the Cubs and Farnsworth, so they felt they had to get rid of him.

The Sisco issue is a complex one. There were many conditioning and behavioral issues here, and the Cubs didn't want to send the wrong message to other players in the system by putting one guy on the 40-man and leaving others who may have worked hard and played by all the rules off.

We'll see how it turns out in the end. Sometimes business works that way. The Cubs, for better or worse, have done their best to get good "character" guys. You can argue the merits of that, but they've tried to be consistent with that philosophy.

Bruce,

I know its been said before, however, we really appreciate your contributions here. Thanks for taking the time to chat with us.

Hey Bruce, you looked great on the WGN rain delay. Did Len ask you about NSBB? I've been trying to get him on here and told him to ask you about the site.

You're quite welcome. I'm happy to do it when I've got the time. Should be an interesting week with the Cubs playing the wild-card contenders from the East.

My prediction is that Mitre and Cedeno get sent down and Remlinger gets DFA'd. I really, really think Mitre is ill-suited for a bullpen role, especially considering he's a sinkerball pitcher and that it usually takes an inning or two for a sinkerballer to really get into a groove.

Well, that's an angle I never looked at before.

replace "Cubdom" with "Dustydom" and "The Cubs" with "Dusty".

Yeah. His weight/work ethic has been discussed a lot since that AP article was published, but I don't recall anyone coming up with that as part of the reason. Interesting.

As always, keep up the great work, Bruce!
