Some people are never happy.

Hendry's at least trying. He might even give Lawton an extension. We could be fans of Cincy, or Texas, who have ZERO chance of getting better.

I would hope Lawton isn't given a payraise if he does get an extension. He's already overpaid for what he offers. I'm happy with the move. It gets a guy on base in this lineup.

And I don't know why you grouped Texas with Cincy. Texas has a great young IF, a couple good young OFs, and a couple of good minor league pitching prospects....not to mention a winning record this season.

A 2 year 12.5-13 mil with an option for a third year wouldn't be that bad IMO.

Depends what else is out there. I'd still like to see Hendry go after Dunn, Huff, Manny this offseason. The Cubs are gonna have an interesting decision whether or not to offer arbitration.

Raw I think alot will depend on the future of Corey Patterson with the Cubs. For some reason I just don't see Dunn, Huff, or Manny with the Cubs. Of all the Reds' outfielders I see Kearns a Cub if possible, but I'm not holding my breath. I still think Hendry will look for a mid-tier OF help next year (Brian Giles, Luis Gonzalez).

Yeah, I think Kearns is possible too. But I don't think Gonzalez or Giles are gonna be Cubs. Hendry has done a good job of getting young production the last couple seasons (Lee, Nomar, ARam, Barrett). Burnitz and Maddux are the only old guys he brought in. Maddux for sentimental reasons. Burnitz because that's all that was left.

Not to pat myself on the back or anything, but this is a conversation I had with a new poster a few hours ago.

I wouldn't be so sure about that. There is no way Littlefield shows up for work on Monday or Tuesday with Lawton still on his roster. Lawton also has quite a bit of money owed to him for the remainder of this year.

I'd bet Wellemeyer would be enough. As would Jody Gerut.

Alright, I was patting myself on the back. Back to your regularly scheduled discussion. :D

If wed give Lawton that, then wed surely pick up Burnitz's option for next year. Which I dont think we will do. That salary is only abou 1M per year less that what hes being paid now in a horrible contract. I'd say depending on how we do from now on and how he enjoys the clubhouse we give him a 2 yr 10M.

Not a blockbuster, but I like it since it addresses the OBP/leadoff issue. Interesting that two years out of the past three we traded with Pittsburgh to get a leadoff hitter. Hopefully the results will be similar.

For those who are griping and writing off the season already, a couple of important points to keep in mind. First, it takes two to tango. The Cubs can't make any more trades if other teams aren't willing to trade. So many teams are still in postseason contention that few teams are ready to write off the season. Second, remember that today is only the NONWAIVER trading deadline. Big trades can and do get done after the deadline (for example, the Ramirez/Lofton trade in 2003). As teams start falling out of the race, I wouldn't be surprised to see more trades made. The next important deadline is Aug. 31, the deadline for postseason roster eligibility.

=D> Very nice. Not the cruz to Oakland call that I had, but still commendable. Good job.

We just got somone who is 6th in the league in Walks and 8th in SB. Not bad. Not saying it couldn't have helped, but power wasn't our biggest concern right now.

Also, the pen should be bolstered, perhaps signifigantly, by the additions of Williamson and Wood. Also, I wouldn't be suprised if we are able to sneak in a reliever through a waiver deal.

I may be wrong, but didn't the Ramirez/Lofton deal happen in mid-July? I know Simon was aquired after the deadline, though.

Gammons just pissed all over the deal. Kinda unnecessary.

?? What did he say?

He was talking about how he felt about making his speech and whatnot, and not being in the mix. He said he was assured that Manny wouldn't be moved - and therefore assured that "nothing of significance" would happen, since neither Boston or the Yankees would be making big moves.

He then said he wasn't all that broken up about missing that "Lawton for Garut blockbuster." Sure, it wasn't an earth-shattering move, but it just continued his tradition of marginalizing everything to do with midwestern baseball.

 You're right. I just looked it up, and it was July 22 (shortly after Goodwin went on the DL).

Nice pickup. Would have liked to see something bigger, but unfortunately idiot organizations like Cincy and Tampa held many of the cards. I hope the league moves Tampa to Vegas.

Not that I dont like the deal, but in the national scope of things, this really isnt a blockbuster. I would agree its probably the blockbuster of the pre-deadline deals, bu that doesnt say much.

Lawton is an excellent candid for a platoon, even more so than Hollandsworth. Murton may indeed continue to get ABs.

since we basically gave up dubois for lawton..i am guessing he is coming here to play everyday. my guess is left field with hairston and burnitz. there is no way we can make the playoffs with burnitz in center. he is an average corner outfielder!

Not since 2000. I don't believe he's a candidate for everyday CF. Edited by Geech

Of course I'm not going to be happy because we won't make the playoffs. We should've just stayed put.

hahaha what? we clearly upgraded in left, and gave up virtually nothing at all. how can you say you are happier staying put?

I wouldnt say that we gave up nothing for Lawton.

i would. where was jody supposed to play? he wasn't going to start over hollandsworth, and murton has been playing more and more. he's ben grieve with better defense. matt lawton can legitimately help this team.

What happens to Hairston, as far as in the lineup?

Lawton

Walker

Lee

Burnitz

Rammy

Nomar

Barrett

Hairston

Pitcher?

I think with Lawton we're getting a speedy-poor-man's Brian Giles. Their statistics are pretty comparable although Giles is very slightly higer in most categories. Any thoughts?

EDIT: Giles does of course have 26 more walks than Lawton, but he's still 5th in the league - not too shabby.
