According to ESPNews, the Padres and Orioles have agreed to swap Phil Nevin and Sidney Ponson.

San Diego seems like an ideal place for Ponson, but this still looks like a bad trade for the Padres, especially if they're only saving a few million dollars and the Orioles aren't picking up any of Ponson's salary. The Padres could move Ryan Klesko back to first base and go with Xavier Nady and Robert Fick, among others, in left field. Or they could just play Nady and Fick at first base. Ponson would likely replace Pedro Astacio in the rotation, and Tim Stauffer would lose his spot if Adam Eaton returns.

Well, that came out of nowhere, and really screws the pooch on the Burnett trade, no?

Just saw that on ESPN News. The anchor said basically the same thing, that this should end Burnett-Lowell to Baltimore talk. Maybe a 3rd team would want Lowell (Twins).

If anything, it makes room for another starting pitcher like Burnett for the Orioles.

if anything i think this makes the burnett trade MORE likely

the orioles needed to find a taker for ponson's salary in order to take on lowell's salary. they've done that, so they can probably take lowell with burnett.

Isn't Nevin a 10 & 5 guy? Why would he approve the deal? Any clauses kick in on being dealt?

from ESPN:

Buster Olney reports that Nevin has a limited no-trade clause and he hasn't approved the deal yet. The Orioles are on the list of teams he does not want to be traded to.

Aren't the Orioles taking on more salary with this deal?

Also, I believe the O's were going to move Lowell to 1B since they have Mora at 3B.

Looks like the Burnett deal's going to have to be re-done.

Strange, considering the wording of the original blurb. You'd think that if the Padres were saving some money, Nevin would be owed more than Ponson, no?

no, ponson is owed more than nevin.

By my count, Ponson makes 8.5 mil this year, and 9 mil next year. Nevin makes 9 mil this year, 10 mil next year, and is due 2 million of a signing bonus in early '07.

I dont understand. Dont the Os need pitching?

Ponson has been dreadful for them this year.

Still...Who are they going to replace him with? They now essentially have another slot in the rotation too add.

Well, I guess anyone could be better than Ponson, but Im still sort of puzzeled since Nevin isnt really all that great either.

Bedard is close to coming back, isn't he? I really don't know much about the O's situation.

does this trade make sense if they aren't acquiring burnett later? even with bedard back, they're still short a starter.

I'm not sure if Nevin is a 5/10 guy, since he played some partial seasons at the beginning of his career. His contract does give him a 8 team No Trade Clause for this year, but I don't know what the teams are.

Buster Olney was on ESPNews and he said that the O's were one of the teams that Nevin had to get approval for if he's traded there. Olney said the Pads were going to play Xavier Nady at 1st now and if Nevin rejects the trade, he'd probably ride the bench.
