We can all stop thinking about trading KWood because it's just not going to happen. Who is going to invest in a $10M a year pitcher who can't stay healthy. This stinks because I really like KW and when he's truly healthy, there are few guys I'd rather have on the mound.

If I were Jim Hendry I would trade Wood as soon as possible. Yes, he can be dominating, but only for a handful of times per season. I knew that this would happen to him again this season. I was absolutely certain. If he only misses a start or two, I'm sure that it will happen again before the season is over.

I don't think Wood scares anybody anymore. Yes, he can be lights out at times, but he is wild enough that disciplined lineups can draw enough walks and fight off enough pitches to elevate his pitch count and knock him out of the game in the 5th.

The Cubs can get more for what they're paying Wood. They should try to trade him to the Texas Rangers for Mench or Nix.

NTC and his value is too low. Nix has struggled as much as Corey and I'm not really a huge fan of Mench. Can't hit for crap away from Ameriquest.

It will be hard to move him because of that clause and because of his salary. But lot's of teams out there, especially ones with relative positional depth but not much pitching might be willing to take a chance on such an enormous "potential" like Wood. The Rangers seem like just that kind of club to me. Wood is a Texan and he might be willing to be traded there. Not to mention that they are WC contenders who could challence for the division if they improve their pitching. Oral Hershiser might be able to do wonders for him.

At this point they should consider trading him for prospects even, they could then spin those prospects for an established guy.

So, anyone think that, say, Woody is out 2 weeks, we should think about (at least for this year) moving him to the bullpen to set the table for Ryan? Especially if whoever gets the chance at his spot does well.

Edit: and, if we're going to trade him, we'd be better off doing it in the winter, hopefully after letting him establish some sort of value to end this season. Right now, you'd be lucky to get a good prospect without eating major cash.

The Cubs aren't going to trade Kerry Wood. Hendry has tried to build this team around his young pitching. Mainly Prior, Zambrano, and Wood. They won't abandon that strategy just yet because they know how dominating the starting staff can be when those guys are all healthy and clicking. They have invested too much money into Kerry to just dump him for some unproven prospects.

If Wood is hurt for an extended period, which is speculation at this point, the Cubs will have to make due. I realize this is a discussion board but some people push the panic button too soon. Obviously, trading him at this point isnt an option, all we can do is hope he is healthy enough to make some starts...

As I was looking around the net I found a little ode to this thread:

Ugh, man people are stupid.

There's a few good posters on that board, but not many anymore...and the mountain of trash you have to sift through to find the nuggets makes it a waste of time.

Obviously, there are many children posting on that forum, as well as many adults who act like children.

Is it just me, or is every other thread on there about the Cubs? Even the threads that aren't about the Cubs turn into Cubs threads somehow.

Typical thread on Cards Talk:

Post 1: Hey, we won again last night. Great game.

Post 2: Yeah, our pitching was awesome.

Post 3: Kerry Wood is hurt again. Cubs fans are stupid. Pujols is better than Lee. Blah Blah Blah.

Post 4: You know who I hate? Cubs fans. They're really stupid. They won't let me post on NSBB. I was going to tell them they suck. It was going to be funny.

Post 5: Dude, that would've been an awesome post! They really do suck! NSBB is a bunch of Nazis.

They're getting to be like Sox fans... they care more about a Cubs loss than a Cards win. (Not all of them, there are a few good posters left. But that board has gone straight down hill)

At least the Cards fans here are actually smart, intelligent baseball fans. They represent the good side of Cardinal fans.

I certainly can agree with that!! We have some pretty good Cardinal fans here.

I agree with your assessment of Cards Talk as well. It used to be a good place to go talk baseball, and there were some VERY good posters there, but now it's just Cub bashing, and more Cub bashing, just for the sake of it.

A little rivlary sparring is one thing, but name-calling and trolling is just out of hand there. They complain about 'Cub Trolls', but then half of their threads are about the Cubs.

Funny stuff!

Just jumped in during my lunch at work.

Disappointed to hear about Kerry, but I believe we need a couple of days to find out exactly what's wrong. As someone mentioned earlier, it could have been the heat or the humidity, or maybe he didn't warm up quite right. Kind of early to over-react.

I've always been a huge Kerry Wood supporter, but doing what's right for the team comes first. That said, I don't think a trade is in the picture. I don't feel the Cubs are ready to give up on Kerry anytime soon, and the no-trade clause doesn't help.

Food for thought, if it's not serious and he doesn't miss any, or much, time, what's the feeling about putting him in the pen? As Beer Kaese said earlier, set up your rotation if you're still in the running and don't mess with it. That way Kerry'd be looking at an inning or time each time out and maybe less strain on the shoulder.

i dont think the Cubs are going to have much choice. He isn't durable enough to remain a starter for much longer. It's only a matter of time before he is going to have to go to the pen full time IMO.

Now we see why Wood has never been a big winner in the Majors. Wood's "stuff" is as good as anyone pitching, but his body just continues to break down. I like Wood a lot, but I think the Cubs need to get him healthy enough to trade in the off season. His "stuff" and reputation will get the Cubs a quality player(s) for him. Also, by next year some more of our highly touted prospects should be ready to pitch for the Cubs.

I understand the frustration, but what do you really think you could get for Wood right now. I can see them moving him to the pitching starved Rangers for a player like Mench (who I like A LOT!). If they did that, they would probably still have to pick up a ton of his contract. No team is looking to get a 10 mil a year injury prone starter. Every reason you would like to get rid of him is why he will be hard to move. Potential can only get you so far. (are you listening corey patterson?)

I didn't say to trade him now, what I did say was to get him healthy enough to trade him in the off season. The only sticking point is his no trade contract. Other than that, I think teams would be lined up around the corner to get Wood and his contract. Going to Texas for Mench would be a fabulous deal.

When does his current contract expire?

Yeah Cards Talk pretty much blows. There is zero moderation.

Birds on the Bat is a better forum. There are some very smart posters over there. But there are also some bully types who like to pound their chests a little too much, and a few too many TLR haters. But all in all a good forum, certainly better than Cards Talk. It too could use some more moderators, though.

So, What is the latest on Kerry?

Did he have an x-ray, mri, something?

I heard last night it was just "stiffness" in the shoulder.

Was he taken out as a precaution

Will he make his next start?

I know its alot of questions, which may not have answers. But I'm lazy and dont feel like searching.

No, that's just crazy talk. That'd be down right... logical.

Injury-prone pitcher leaves game with "shoulder stiffness". Fans, tired of the same old, same old, react negatively. Illogical or realists?

The fact is Wood has not dominated or had his good stuff since the end of 2003 as far as I'm concerned.

Hey, it would be nice if you guys would, you know, look at statistics and stuff before spouting off an opinion.

Before Wood went on the DL last season

45.2IP 28H 3HR 13BB 50K

After coming off the DL this season, and before yesterday

25.2IP 16H 4HR 6BB 24K

That looks like a whole bunch of good starts while he was healthy.

Now I agree that it sucks that he can't stay healthy, and that he needs to do something about his health issues, but the amount of uninformed opinions in this thread alone is staggering.

Kerry didn't leave the game, he was pulled from it. He wanted to stay in, and he made that clear when he was on the mound. They pulled him as a precaution. Maybe they were being overly cautious, and Kerry could've finished the game and loosened that shoulder. My point was that there is no reason to assume the sky is falling before we know what's really going on.

Ugh, if they are saying maybe only 1 start they won't DL him yet, so Mitre or Rusch will get the start. I'd really like to have them give Hill a chance at starting...
