Cubs get RP Ryan Zeferjahn from Angels

This guy has been getting 41% whiffs on his 4-seam this year, which is Mason Miller/the Miz terrority.   Looks like he added more cut to it since last season.

So we added an elite 4-seam with him and an elite 2-seam with Holmes. Plus added a guy who posted a sub-3 ERA in last year's playoffs. Hot damn!

I’m giving Jed some healthy credit where it’s due.  Nobody expects the number of pitching injuries we’ve had but Jed’s response has been to chip away at it before the deadline and then make some quality moves at the deadline.  He stepped up and acted to address the problem.  Will it all work out?  I don’t know.  But I’m a fan of how the FO has dealt with this.

Zeferjahn is also getting 40% whiffs on his sweeper this year and last,  and 45%+ on his curve. His stuff has truly been elite per his K/9.

Agree.  He also added Peterson, which was a solid trade.

I'm not even worried much about the rotation next year.  We're losing guys but also freeing up lots of money and there will be lots of quality SP on the FA market, plus we can always swing another trade.  The season might not even begin until the ASB lol

As someone who wrote about Ryan Zeferjahn last night I had to refrain from writing the names Mason Miller and Jacob Misiorowski myself. And it made me feel like I was being cheap for even mentioning Miller once. 

But if Mike Petriello is writing about him and using the same comps, then I don't feel so bad, because that guy is in another orbit when it comes to ball knowledge.

It all comes down to the control strides he's made in the last month and a half. If they're for real, and I'm assuming the Cubs think they are, he's a steal

If they're real, than Mason Miller as a comp is real, too. Like no joke. One of these is Mason Miller this year and the other is Zeferjahn since June 23rd. You tell me which is which: 

Player A:  49.2 K%, 8.9 BB%, 0.76 ERA, 1.35 xERA, 1.33 xFIP 
Player B: 46 K%, 6.3 BB%, 1.69 ERA, 1.66 xERA, 1.93 xFIP

 

They're virtually identical. Obviously one of those is a full year and the other is 16 innings, so take it with a very large grain of salt...but yeah, that's nuts.

Because 16 innings is a small sample size. But it's a damn good gamble to take.

He wasn't even being acknowledged as an acquisition by most sports networks. Even Braxton Garrett was getting acknowledged.
