Well, the Cubs keep doing it despite their pitching staff being in tatters. They're successfully limping to the deadline, which is really the most you can expect of them given the circumstances.

The wind deserves credit too. He could just throw meatballs and it was next to impossible to reach the bleachers

Steele may not be back at all this year now? Who botched that injury? He was injured way early in the season last year.  Ugh.

Where are you seeing that?  Last update was about a week ago when Craig said Steele wouldn't be back in the rotation, but would likely help the pen in some capacity in September.

No one really botched anything. Steele has a long injury history. I think people forget, he was a prep-pick in the 2014 draft; the same year the Cubs took Schwarber. From 2015-2021 (his MLB debut) he had two years where he topped 50 IP. He's had one TJS prior to to this. Two years ago he got hurt on Opening Day and last year in April. Him having a set back returning from a brace surgery was always a likely outcome. 

As of last week, the Cubs have stated that he will start throwing in August and is targeting a September return for the bullpen. But also, to be fair to the Cubs, they have been saying it was unlikely he'd start games this year since like, June. They're being overly cautious at this stage, and probably for good reason. There's a very real chance of another setback once he gets on a mound or rehabs, so yeah, he might not be back. Time is working against him at this point.

Agree to disagree.  He got hurt last April.  The timeline has continually been moved back.  He had a set back.  I would not say that was a "likely outcome" though it was the outcome.

The timeline has been moved back one time this year: when he suffered a hip flexor strain. Since then the Cubs have given no timeline other than "we hope to have him back" until July.
April 28th - Cubs announce Steele has a setback. No timeline given
June 23rd - Cubs say Steele will not return in the rotation
July 8th - Cubs outline throwing plan and targeting a return on the mound in August
July 12th - Cubs confirm previous timeline, he will begin throwing off a mound in August with a September return

So I'll be honest when I say I don't know why you think it's been continually moved back. It feels like maybe you either have missed these updates (no shame in that!), misremembering, or something...but it's been one move back. 

When players miss as much time as Justin Steele has over the last year, with an elbow injury, subsequent injuries are pretty common. Pitching is an unnatural motion. Shane Bieber suffered a setback himself rehabbing from TJS just last year. Steele has a litany of injuries. He hasn't made it a full MLB season without an IL-trip.

'21: Hamstring
'22: Back tightness
'23: Forearm strain
'24: Hamstring
'25: Internal brace surgery

Him having a hiccup in a buildup after that much time off feels like a likely outcome. Not a "definite" outcome, but one that was well within the realm of possibilities and one everyone should have been prepared for.
