I'm sure there's at minimum a handshake agreement that the Steelers have to OK whatever job he takes or get compensation in return from the hiring team.

It's more than that.  The Steelers still have Tomlin's rights.  He's probably not going to get another HC job without some kind of compensation to the Steelers.

Jesus. I wouldn’t have expected it but I suppose at a certain point if you couldn’t get over the hump in the AFC THIS year, somebody’s gotta answer for it.

Man that's tough.  Never got over that hump.  I guess losing to Mahomes and the Chiefs in their prime is one thing.  Losing to "lollipop Nix" is quite another.  Also I wonder if they want to do the copy-cat thing and hire a young offensive-minded coach like everyone else.

The current longest tenured coach in the AFC is Andy Reid, as expected.

The second longest? Cincinnati's Zac Taylor.

I expected this. His "standing up for Buffalo" speech was a last ditch effort to save his job.

McDermott did a lot to change the culture in Buffalo, but last year's AFC championship loss to KC was telling. They punched KC in the mouth in the regular season, but in the playoffs, they played to not lose. And that's how you lose.

The expectations might have been unfair this year considering how many key players had been lost, but clearly they feel some urgency to bring in a guy who can take their generational QB all the way and they no longer view McDermott as that guy. Harbaugh should have waited a bit longer.

Would Harbaugh have been the right choice for them though?  I have my doubts.  I'm thinking they want a young offense-minded coach.

Probably not.

I’m with Rex. Sell your soul for a championship and bring in Belichick. Otherwise, Kubiak seems like the obvious choice.

the bills are interviewing rivers for head coach

My gut tells me it will eventually be Kubiak and they are waiting for the Seahawks season to end. Interviewing Rivers is... interesting.

Bidding their time, remember who the Bears "interviewed" while waiting for the Lions season to end?

If there were one coach who's had a modicum of success that I would want no part of coaching my team it's Mike McCarthy. It's nothing personal. I just don't believe in him.

He MIGHT get five years in Pittsburgh

We really went from Harbaugh vs. Tomlin to Minter vs. McCarthy.

It just seems like a bizarre, out-of-character hire for the Steelers.
