He's going to be smoking in the tunnel by the 5th inning.

Yup the Cubs SP had an average xFIP in the 2nd half.  The entire staff were 23rd in xFIP for the season.  Our pitching is at best average and helped a ton by defense and Wrigley wind.  However, I think some of this is by design as Jed seems to not put much money into the rotation and pen but towards the position side.

The opposite of the Phillies basically. It creates a nice floor for total wins.

Do not start Imanaga Monday! Start Rea and if he looks shaky then go to Shota. Another soft throwing lefty won’t work.

I don't blame Jed for not getting another starter at the deadline in retrospect considering what the asking prices were for the top shelf ones. Kelley and Bieber were pretty good, but not great additions. The Cubs staff has been really good in the second half. It's the hitting that went from the 3rd most runs scored before the All Star break to 13th. I'm more worried about the top and middle of the order than the pitching staff.

Tucker hasn't really done horsefeathers for us in the post season. I mean he's taking up a spot I'd like to have Mo occupying vs right handers and he can't play the field. We lost our #1 starter to a weird cracked rib like wtf how does that even happen in baseball unless you got plunked. Just some bad luck but next years going to be our year i feel it.

Season isn’t over.. today sucks but it’s far from over

I'm just sitting here sulking in this performance (although the series is far from over) and thinking, I really want Schwarber next year.  I know Jed won't do it, but give me that elite power bat in the lineup.

Tucker went 3-8 last series. Ballesteros went 0-1 with a K.

I get that Ballesteros represents a mystery box, but c'mon.

You don't assess value after the deadline, you assess it on the deadline. Whatever happens afterwards is irrelevant for any baseball team who doesn't employ a full-time psychic on staff. There is no going back in time. You can only guess what will come next.

It's all opportunity cost. The opportunity cost at the deadline was incredibly steep based on all reporting and the fact none of the big arms went. The prices for even the Merril Kelly's were pretty hefty.

Agreed.   And same with any decision.   Including starting Boyd on 3 days rest.  It was a gamble and Counsell lost.

That feels like a contract that in two years everyone hates. He's a fun bat, but 33-year old DH with contact issues feels like a bad 5 year investment

This rotation isn't good enough to beat Brewers, Dodgers, Yankees IMHO. But I mean hey this is only 1 game of course

Exactly why Jed won't do it, and perhaps rightfully so.  But that doesn't stop me from wanting him!

Be careful what you wish for.  Counsell might give you Taillon on 3 days rest.

Crap! I didn’t think about Counsel’s might go that route. Good post!!!!

Getting destroyed is one thing.  Knowing you are burning arms in the process just makes it worse

I do wonder if at the end of the game Civale, after throwing 100 pitches, will have a "forearm tightness" and get replaced with Assad.

I'm getting Miggy 2003 vibes with this kid and I think he's capable of big things in this series at the plate. If Tucker could play RF that would obviously be ideal.

Pitching sucked today but if the Cubs don’t hit that’s all irrelevant. Cubs bats need to show up this series.

I miss seeing his swing when he absolutely dials in on a pitch.  For me it’s more about seeing him do it for another team but I agree with JR in this.  It’s a nice thought but not a good decision.
