I mean, outside of that one horrific inning, he's actually been quite good. 17.1 IP 3ER going into this outing.

he really only had two bad games all year, and they screwed his stats. He gave up NO RUNS in all of april or may expect for his 8 run meltdown .; IN march, he gave un 1 run once, and 2 runs once. that's It. He has been perfect except 3 games, and bad in only 2.

Really? How many clean innings has he had? How many bats has he missed?

One thing I didn’t expect to see out of the season was that Matt Shaw would come back to the majors and turn into Brooks Robinson at 3B.

I'll bet he hasn't more than a handful of clean innings, what's the xBAIP against him?  I'm guessing it's high but, I bet it's artificially too high, seems everything put in play is a hit.

His WHIP this year without the blowup extra inning performance is 1.47 and he’s striking out 4.7 per 9 innings. I’m not saying he shouldn’t be getting more chances to get on track but I’m not sure I’d make the argument that he’s actually good except 2 games this year. The results have been acceptable outside of those performances but the underlying numbers wouldn’t suggest that he’s been pitching effectively, though seems to be a little better lately

Hope the offense bothers to show up tomorrow.

I believe in this offense, but they've been on a pace that's going to be hard to sustain. They'll score more than 3 more times than not, but they'll have plenty of these games too and they have to find ways to win them without a lot of crooked numbers.

nah, people get too obsessed with stats.
a good game is a game where you give up zero runs, as a closer, and come away with a win.
He's done that all games except 3. No matter how sloppy , he's a winner. that's the whole purpose of baseball- win games, not have perfect stats.

Granted, its better for long term projections if you have clean games. but frankly, some of the greatest pitchers who won big games were sloppy.

Think the Colorado starter kept the ball down, guessing from his numbers that's been the problem.  Unfortunately the best, kind of break through start for him had to come against the Cubs.  Don't think he'll being able to replicate it next time he faces the Cubs.

Don't face them again til late August,  and the wind won't be blowing in in Colorado 😉

Not the prettiest win but the key word is win

W's are the whole goal....
That kid pitched well for the Sox.

Tomorrow is a truly awful starting pitcher- he wouldnt be in the rotation for any other team than the Rockies.

Not many, hes walking guys and not missing bats.
Hes gotten insanely lucky so far and thankfully Counsell has a brain and hasn’t given the closer job back to him

Good win. Who cares if it a game where they didn’t hit well and it was against a terrible team. All that matters is it is another W.

So glad that 2023 Taillon wasn’t what we were getting for four years. Turned out to be a really solid signing.

He's very interesting pitcher from a stat perspective. It's not often you see xFIP and FIP disagree to such a large degree. 3.88 xFIP and 5.13 FIP after today's start.

Why Mcguire instead of Ballesteros?

Ballesteros isn't ready to catch in the majors.

He's been even better than I thought but defense was never his problem, which is why a lot of us wanted him up when it became clear no other 3B option could hit either. But TBF, the adjustments they wanted him to make seem to have taken at the plate.
