I wasn’t suggesting they were tanking by trading Donato, but trading him doesn’t make the team better next season.

I'd definitely like to see him return.

Keeping him does not the team better either.

Don't give Donato away but if the right offer comes along, you better belive the Hawks will take it.

My arbitrary value line would be between a 2nd and 3rd round pick. A 3rd isn’t worth it.

Id prefer future picks as well. They don’t need 2025 picks, they probably pay have too many. A future second will be an asset the include when they start trading for others teams guys, or somebody they select when todays prospects need to be replaced as they become eligible for 2nd and 3rd contracts.

could be something or could be nothing but Seth admitting “I would like to give myself a chance to win in my career” seems like a step in that direction. I still think it’s a long shot. Jones is still a good defenseman filling a needed spot. In the not too distant future he may become a third pairing guy, but he’s not that now. Unless they really want to clear space for Levshunov to play big NHL minutes tomorrow, and/or wanted to clear space to incentivize Rinzel to turn pro, there isn’t a really good hockey reason to make this move.

I'm following this thread from afar. I'm not the biggest hockey fan. Why is it taking so long for the Hawks to even become respectable on the way to being good? Like shouldn't they marginally improve year over year?

When the tank began everybody that understood the process said it’ll be 2027 at least until they are good.

They are marginally better than last year. They’ve competed most of this year while last year they were a cake walk.

In hockey you need two legit scoring lines and 2 more solid ones just for a chance to compete. Very good teams have 3rd line guys that are better than Chicago’s top line.  The Blackhawks have less than one full line. It’s basically a roster of middle to bottom six guys playing up one or two slots, with the exception of Bedard. They need guys who can hang with Bedard. Those guys are coming but not yet in NHL(or at least not NHL regulars).

When you start from scratch it takes forever to get the ~9 impact forwards and 4 very good D to win consistently. very few forwards and practically zero defensemen make immediate impacts after getting drafted.  They will probably be better next year (IF THEY ACTUALLY ACQUIRE A SECOND BANANA) but a 20 point jump right now, which would be a big step, still puts them outside the wild card.

I think a lot of casual fans don't realize just how bad the Hawks (and Sharks and Ducks) were last year. Last year they finished the season with 52 points, which was 25 points out of 7th place in their division. This year, at the ASB they have 41 points, still in last place, but actually competing with the lower half teams in the league.

To put it this way, they could improve their standing by about 20 points this season (72 points), which would be effectively an 8-10 win improvement, and still finish last in their division.

Coaching matters A LOT as well. The Blue Jackets wasted three seasons with Brad Larsen/Pascal Vincent who didn't develop any young players. This year, Dean Evason comes in and suddenly all the young players are having career years.

It sounds like Jones has asked for a trade.

Boy howdy has this team gone to horsefeathers

Lack of talent aside. I don’t think Sorensen is doing a poor job, but it’s obvious that he isn’t the guy we need at the helm next season.

Son reports suggesting the Jackets are interested in bringing going Jones back. Don’t think I want him, even if the Blackhawks eat salary

Oh yea, didn’t you claim the Blue Jackets make the DUMBEST moves? Sounds perfect. Trade him to Colombus

They did when Jarmo was the GM. This new regime seems to have their shite together

2026 or 2027 pick?

I'm not sure exactly what their pick situation is for 2026, but I read the Blackhawks receive the 2026 pick if it is available.  Otherwise, it becomes a 2027 pick.
