I just started following hockey this season. Technically last season during the playoffs but this is my first full season. I have no idea how a sport this fun managed to stay on my ignore list for my first 37 years of life but I’m so glad I got into it. I dont get how this game is 4th most popular in the US. Faster than football and as much action as basketball seems like a perfect sport to be popular in the US.

except from what i see the league seems to be pretty awful at advertising itself and the blackouts seem more ridiculous than even MLB. And it seems like every bit of merchandise costs $250. Maybe thats just the panthers though.

either way i just decided to stop in and say that hockey is awesome

So basically hockey became fun to you because the Panthers have been good?  Or you are following the entire league?  I have to admit, I enjoy hockey but I get a bit fair weathered when the Hawks suck.  During the dynasty run, I would probably tell you the top 2 lines on most teams.  Now when I watch non-Blackhawks games I only recognize a few players.  I think I'm going to get back into fantasy hockey again to help me get more familiar with the current players again.

But anyways the Hawks have been bad to terrible for quite awhile now so its been much less fun for me.  And yes the league is terrible at advertising itself.

Eh, the Panthers being so good definitely helped, but I think I probably get into it around now either way. Maybe I’d be a lightning fan instead though, I live about equal distance from tampa and miami. Ive never loved football or basketball and Ive been leaning away from baseball ever since the Cubs started angering me. So I kinda found myself without a sport to follow and that was never gonna last.

I’m trying to learn the ins and outs of the whole league on the fly. Even non panthers games that i’ve watched on tv this season have been really entertaining. Its just a super fun game to watch.

Another one goal loss. Another empty netter given up. Another goal by Bedard. The first assist by Nazar. Despite the recent wins this team is still last overall in the league and going to draft somebody with a ton of talent.  But they’ve got a long way to go to match the excitement and talent of a team like the devils with scoring coming from all sorts of guys and budding superstars all around.

Playoff hockey is insane. Especially if "your" team is in it. Still good even if they aren't. Teams trying everything to get that goal. The Hawks were awesome for like 10 straight years until 2018. Since then, blah.

My life more or less revolves around hockey. I watch it, I play it, I live next to a rink and take my kid to watch games most nights.

The biggest issue is that it's expensive.  The best way to drive fans to your sport is have kids playing it, and there's no getting around the fact that ice time is expensive and scarce in a way no other sport has to deal with.

The NHL's dirty secret is that, with some exceptions, we're watching the rich kids.

If Mrazek had any trade value it is gone

Mrazek never had any trade value. His entire value was being a okay goaltender for a bad team.

I’d argue he was a pretty good goaltender for about 3/4 of a season

they are kind of stuck with goaltender glut if they ever get the new guy back. The best option was probably to trade mrazek and keep soderblom

Another game another multi goal deficit. Mrazek has given up five goals on 26 shots.

Bedard has a goal and his 100th point.

The short handed goal almost seemed like Mrazek was inviting it. He lifted his leg at just the right time for the puck to go underneath and right into the net. Something really needs to happen there, and soon.

hagel turned into a star for Tampa Bay

I know he started developing into a star with the Hawks, but my goodness.but what a total whiff by the Buffalo Sabres. They could not even sign him. At least the Hawks got some value for him.

Blackhawks made a seemingly meaningless trade, defensemen Isaak Philllips for defensemen Dmitry Kuzmin. Chicago gets the slightly younger player who was drafted two rounds earlier (3 v 4) and one year later. Kuzmin is a buddy of first round pick Levahunov, who was bench this past week for missing a team meeting.

From Mark Lazarus:

Blackhawks sign AJ Spellacy, a third rounder in 2024, to a three-year entry-level contract ($975,000 cap hit). Spellacy had a dynamite training camp and could be a nice piece of the puzzle in the not-too-distant future.

Sounds like a Taylor Hall trade is gaining steam. Carolina, perhaps?

They got their third round pick back from Carolina which is kind of a pointless trade to make unless Hall wanted out and they wanted to make him happy
