Steele & Hendricks both likely back in the next 10-15 days

Seiya probably not far off from a rehab either?

And then from last night reasonably good news on Wicks and seemingly great news on Bellinger

oh so we're just gonna go spit in god's face then huh, that's how we're gonna play it

when Dansby comes down with club foot and Assad goes blind in one eye after a freak gasoline fight accident, we'll know who is responsible

And then circling back to Hendricks, if you want some reason for optimism that an IL stint has a chance to help things, looks like his release point was off in the early going this season

(Also the entire thread from Bryan should probably be required reading)

Finger's crossed on Hendricks. If they're going to insert him back in the rotation, he just cannot be the guy who we've seen this year. I'm really rooting for him to figure it out and find it. With that said, the trend on that release point is pretty interesting and I can't really explain it, as it certainly has a downward trend. It's also interesting because he was not particularly good in 2021 but was in 2023 and they had similar release points. I can't really explain those things, so hopefully he and the Cubs can.

With hope it's fixable and I'd at least like Hendricks to go out as a pretty decent rotational arm. He deserves to leave the Cubs with dignity as he's been such a good member.

That's crazy he cracked his ribs and can do that stuff, good news though.

What's the update on Wicks?  It says "strained forearm" but that could mean anything including elbow.

Besides this, they do need innings from him. Hard to depend on Wicks, Assad, Brown, Wesneski and maybe even Horton to eat up innings when all will be watched closely to make sure they don’t throw too many innings. Besides that, Imanaga is used to more rest between starts. They need Hendricks to be better.

Maybe Hendricks has osteoporosis and he's slowly shrinking in height,

Right or wrong, every time I hear forearm strain for a pitcher I expect TJS is forthcoming.

Most sports around the world: “10-15 days? Yes, he’s only going to miss one game or two at a maximum.”

Baseball: “10-15 days? horsefeathers yeah, he’s only going to miss a further 13 or 14 games.”

If they can get more SP healthy they may need a couple of these SP guys in the pen to eat some innings or piggyback to avoid what you're saying.  Having just 5 SP healthy at any one time isn't going to cut it IMO unless all the vets are the ones healthy.  Nice to see Keegan do well so far too.

Good thing is if we include Keegan and Smyly we have 10 SP/longmen on this team when all healthy by my count, plus Horton.

For me, ideally I would like to see Steele, Imanaga, Tallion, Wicks and Hendricks in the rotation. Then spot Assad in when they have a lot of games in a row. This way starters get 5 days rest. Use Brown, Smyly, Wesneski and Keegan in the pen. They can piggyback every so often, too as you suggested. If Hendricks still sucks when he comes back, they may juggle that 4th and 5th spot between Assad, Wicks, Brown and Wesneski so that none of them throw too many innings. And they may use Smyly and Thompson in piggyback roles as well, to limit innings.

Why wouldn't they have gotten Wicks MRI done already? If it is because of swelling that is concerning. But that doesn't appear to be the case. You'd think they would get that done right away.

I saw they were going to get it done in New York.  So my guess is logistics of doing it on the road were just easier there.  And once you've committed to IL'ing him there's not a ton of urgency.

Also looks like I missed a Merryweather update on the broadcast last night

If he hasn't even started throwing yet feels like a May return is already off the table (though being on the 60 day IL may have forced that regardless).

Looks like he went on the IL on 4/7 so he's not eligible to return until June 6th if my math is right.

take your time, Kyle

Eh, if they're insistent on still trying with Kyle I'd rather see him back quick. Id rather find out if their adjustments with Hendricks have made a difference before Steele returns, or Wicks if we get lucky. Getting everyone healthy and bumping Assad to the bullpen for a ineffective Hendricks would be more annoying.

Gotta believe if the imaging had shown anything bad for Wicks that he wouldn't be playing catch

If we see the towel drill, all bets are off.
