Re: the “do right by Justin” comments.

I really don’t think that holding onto him is contrary to that statement. It seems obvious that Poles wanted to trade Fields to a team that valued him as a starter. But what is he supposed to do, force a trade to a team that doesn’t value Fields and has other plans at the position? Is that doing right by fields?

he wanted to hand Fields a good situation, but there isn’t a good situation to hand him. His best bet is backing up a shaky veteran or starting for a team breaking in a rookie. Well, the team he’s currently on could offer the latter, and most teams under the former scenario would rather pay some average Joe $7m than give up anything more valuable than cash.

yup

I’ll say it right now.  Start Fields and red shirt Caleb.  It’s a completely valid strategy that has worked in the real world most notably a couple hundred miles north.

Except they did it because they had a good quarterback. We have a bad quarterback.

If I'm Caleb Williams. undisputed No. 1 OA pick, and you told me I'm redshirting a year behind Justin Fields, I'm gonna start making a stink.  You can draft me anyway and I'll probably just have to take it, but I'm gonna make it damn uncomfortable for you for awhile and make all kinds of stink about it.  Straight up tell the media 'they shouldn't draft me if they don't believe in me.'

If I’m Caleb Williams and the undisputed #1 pick in the draft and Justin Fields is as bad as you say he is, I like my chances. A lot.

Light cost, but Allen is often injured so I'm guessing thats why his value is so low.  But obviously an incredible receiver when healthy. Exciting addition!

The Bears now have 4 picks in the draft.  I don't think that will stand....either they are keeping Fields and trading 1.1 or they are trading down with the 9th pick.

I would rather have Odunze than Allen if they end up trading the 9th pick now

Me too...maybe they don't feel great about him falling to 9. Or maybe they like the edge rushers later in the 1st round and are ok with trading down and making this trade to get their WR.

Allen is 32 and under contract for 1 more season with an 18m cap hit so this is definitely more of a shorter term move.

Don't want to seem like I'm against the move, I love Keenan Allen!  Just trying to evaluate the deal in my head and how it affects things moving forward.

I wonder if the fact that Poles has mostly spent FA nickle and diming for complimentary players is specifically so he doesn't have to trade down and load back up on picks.

Possible....just have a hard time seeing the guy who said he wants to build through the draft going into one with just 4 picks (even if 2 of them are in the top 10).

Of course there's other ways to get later round picks so we'll see what he does.

I read somewhere the Bears will get a comp pick for Mooney signing with the Falcons.  Does that come in this year's draft or next years?  A 4th rounder right?
