For the life of me I will never understand the “can’t have Fields in the clubhouse” argument. He’s under contract for one year. Hes a good guy/teammate He’s proven over and over he’s not THE guy. But he’s capable of winning a game or two. If Williams is any good he’ll win the job in the summer and it’ll be obvious he should be the starter. If Williams gets injured then fields starts. If Fields goes on a tear, great! If he fuddles along like he’s done so far in his caeeer, so be it.

there is not going to be a clubhouse split about who should start. If Williams starts and is bad enough that people will be clamoring for Fields, that situation is not any better with Fields in another uniform.

ideally, somebody else gets hurt in September and Fields is sitting there as a guy they’d be willing to trade a 2nd for.

But they should not trade him today for a 6th just because they are afraid of him being in the locker room with Williams.

I just don't understand why I should want it to happen?

I'm sure the clubhouse could be made to fall in line. But what's there to gain? I'd rather have a savvy vet in the QB room backing up

What about my mental state? Does that not matter to you? 😅

Actually, this outcome might finally get me to delete twitter and take my life back

The funniest thing ever would be a reunion with Getsy in LV and they both ball out

Savvy vet backups are overpaid and not that savvy and generally suck. Fields is good for a game or two here or there. He’s also a weapon they could utilize in fun ways a couple times a game. And the point is to get more value out of an asset.

This.

Especially if the plan was to acquire some other veteran to backup/mentor Williams after Fields was traded.

If the offers for Fields are that low, the best use of resources may be to bring him back for another year.

i don’t think Poles/Eberflus have handled Fields perfectly, but where we’re at right now has basically been the inevitable result after Pace/Nagy drafted him on their way out the door and he didn’t immediately save their jobs.

I'm not even sure fields would want to stay in that scenario

That is true. But he’ll know the offers that are out there and he’ll know people were willing to offer no more than a 6th (if that’s the case), so what are his options if nobody wants him this offseason? Demand a release?

My greatest fear is that the Bears decide that if they can't trade him maybe they can try to sign him to a very cheap extension and trade the number 1 pick.

if that happens it won't be because the bears can only get a 5th rounder or w/e instead of a 2nd rounder on fields though

and they'd still draft a qb in the first two rounds

I don't think the Bears are gonna settle on sticking with Fields because the market is so bad for him they can't get anything for him. That wouldn't make any sense. You stick with an asset because everyone else think it's a bad asset?

It would be high-larious if they trade him to Minnesota and he ends up incredible. It's a risk I'd be willing to take, of course.

Another edge rusher off the boards.  Am I crazy in thinking the Bears are sitting out the rest of the first wave of FA?  Haven't seen many rumors.

It's also possible I'm being overly impatient.

You have to assume Poles sits out the first wave of FA until he actually participates in the first wave. It’s his 3rd offseason and so far the biggest guys are running backs and linebackers listed in the middle of top 100 free agent lists. He’s not a top of the market guy.

Just keeping this here for posterity

I've never seen quite a swing like I've seen on Bears reddit the last few months. My opinion hasn't changed, but I've gone from a troll-doomer-idiot for doubting fields to being on the more optimistic side for my belief that we can probably get a 4th for him and he's useful as a backup/weak half of a competition.

I'm not tuned into the larger Bears fanbase, I think there's still some pockets of Fields Trutherism, but that Packers game changed the vibe entirely where I've seen.
