I think there is a scenario where Chapman can make some sense to the Cubs. Just not at $100/5 years. If his value does slip some and he can be had for something like 4/$72M AND the Cubs signed Ohtani, he could make sense as the second bat. He should not be the main signing on the offense.

Some team is going to give him a six year contract. It's the nature of FA.

Most likely true. That, I wouldn’t want the Cubs to do.

Jed clearly doesn't have a problem with streaky hitters that play great defense, so I doubt he has any issue with Chapman.

That said, there's only so many long term contracts a team can run and maintain the financial flexibility he so clearly values.  Chapman, particularly given that he's tied to a QO, doesn't seem like a guy he'd use one of his 2-3 bullets on.

But where are you getting this idea that he will sign 2/$20M? Are you saying $10M a year? That isn’t happening. He also isn’t signing for only 2 years. There really is no point suggesting you would sign a guy and then also suggest a contract he would never sign.

Sorry, it was 2/40.  Another user said "i wouldn't even sign him for 2/40".  Agree it would never happen, but that's beside the point.

Agree, I can't see him signing here

Feels like Free Agency will sit still for as long as Ohtani takes, within reason.  I don't think the trade market holds on much longer.  A couple teams not really in on Ohtani like the Braves (I don't buy this AM's report) appear itchy to get things moving.

Yep. Feels like the trade market will move regardless of Ohtani. Free agents will (mostly) wait. Though I can see a team trying to jump the pitching  market on like a Jordan Montgomery or a Blake Snell if they don't want to wait on Yamamoto. Teams who aren't in on Ohtani and aren't going to spend $200m on Yamamoto might jump in and grab those 2nd tier arms before they are fighting with the teams who lost out on Yamamoto.

Wade Miley back to the Brewers on a 1 year deal and they also signed Joe Ross to a major league deal.

Joe Ross? To an MLB contract?

That Miley deal was a steal. 7M in 2023 with a mutual option in 2024 for 12M and a 1.5M buyout. He does have some escalators built into the contract based on IP and if he's traded.

I didn't think it was possible to have a team I wanted Ohtani to go to less than the Dodgers.

For me, it was the New York teams. And now the braves!

The only other team I can tolerate Ohtani going to are the Blue Jays, of the teams that sound like they are in the market for him.

I’m not looking to sign Chapman without Ohtani but there’s a lot to like about his offense. He makes a ton of hard and barreled contact, gets it in the air, takes walks, doesn’t chase…good foundation to go with his defense

last 3 seasons he has the same OPS+ as Wisdom
