I don't know.  Suddenly Boras seems open to extensions (with Alonso and Harper), so watch the Yankees immediately lock Soto up long term.

What extension did Alonso and Harper get?

What good would that do? Juan Soto was never available in the way the field wanted: cheap if not cheaper. For context: we were having serious discussions about Christopher Morel being an overpay for 25-26 YO Juan Soto (tbf I wasn’t into it either but because Soto doesn’t do what even more available Ohtani does for a roster already worse than last year’s 83 wins).

The Padres did alright here. Both Vasquez and Thorpe are  serious SP prospects, King, Vasquez, and Brito are already versatile and productive, Higashioka’s an outstanding defensive C, and moving on from Grisham opens up CF for Tatis Jr

I was going to bring up how the Yankees have blown up their pitching depth too, maybe, but maybe they are that deep. Doors just open for Brock Selvige (a LH Thorpe?) , Will Warren, Clayton Beeter, Richard Fitts, Yoendrys Gomez, Zach Messinger, etc. An offense and a Gerrit Cole can go a long way towards building a pitching staff

A healthy Carlos Rodon would not hurt.

They haven't, but I read something where Boras said Harper is seeking an extension and that they were open to listening on Alonso.

So until Boras actually does extend someone on his last year (Harper would qualify here) I am sticking with the thought Soto will be available next season. Not that it matters. He will want and get more than the Cubs will give.

I think the Harper one is a bit of a red herring. Harper still has eight years left on his contract. And he's 31 years old. So we're talking about an extension for 39 year old Bryce Harper...of course he's interested in that now. 39 year old Bryce Harper is forever away and I don't think the Phillies are all that worried about extending him today.

Kind of sounds like the Cubs were in on Soto more than we might have thought?

The optimist in my wants to believe that Jed lost Soto because he's far deeper in talks with Ohtani then we've been led to believe. The pessimist in my says, Jed completely misread Ohtani and in chasing the biggest prize when they were never a realistic get, ended up costing himself Soto as well.

Option C : The Yankees offered a package the Cubs weren't comfortable matching, for reasons that had nothing to do with salary. I mean, it's not like there was some recruiting pitch that had to be done here.
