I'm pretty sure it's specifically barred by CBA.

Was it the NBA or NFL players union that talked about wanting to get pathways to ownership in next CBA?  I think it was NBA.  But NFL union should fight for that too, absolutely.

So yea isn't happening.

I think Poles is more in the Maye camp than Williams, which is a guess on my part.  However, I think Poles puts a quite a bit of stock in a position' ideal physical attributes.  Such as QB's should be tall with a big arm, I think Maye has the arm strength and is closer to a legit 6-4 than Williams is to 6-1.  I've watched both play, I can't help but see some similarities, in that, Williams, much like Fields did, has all day to throw.  ND got after him and he didn't beat their blitzes along with throwing some terrible interceptions.  Maye has made some good plays and bad plays, he though, doesn't get the amount of time that Williams does and, he's not surrounded by as much talent as Williams either.  Yet, he's managed to put up some good numbers.

I still haven't watched enough USC games to really reliable critic Williams, but in the 2 I have watched, if he doesn't have all day to throw, he's pretty mediocre.

And he won't have that kind of time in the NFL

Even if he scrambles around like he does at USC, every player on the field will be bigger/faster/better than the CFB opposition. It's such a huge step up in competition, he or Maye or any other QB will have a steep learning curve.

It makes Stroud's start very impressive by comparison.

College football is so much slower and less complicated than the NFL that it's just impossible to tell who will adapt to NFL speeds and who won't, which is why QBs are notoriously hard to project.

Maybe Williams will adjust and be fine, but I don't blame anyone for being gunshy about him after what we went through with fields.

If the Bears get 1OA and between now and the draft Williams stock falls, I wouldn't be disappointed.

I say we just draft both, loan one of them out to another NFL team for a season and see which one develops better. Oh wait, you can't loan out players in the NFL, I forgot.

Seriously though, we haven't even come close to securing the top pick and already I'm tortured by the thought of picking Williams or Maye and screwing it up once again while the other becomes a franchise QB.  Sad life we live as Bears fans...

You know whoever the Bears draft will be the wrong one. It doesn't matter.

I think you can rule out any thought of AZ trading their first round picks for a QB. Kyler Murray is signed through 2028 and his dead cap hit is rather large, so trades are not an option. Does AZ really trade blue chip draft position for a QB to learn behind Murray for 5 years?

I don’t think Arizona is committed to Murray as the starter next year, let alone the next 5.
