Happy for you that the cubs royally sucked tonight so you could post your little ‘gotcha’ tonight

that’s dumb. I want them to be good. I think this team SHOULD be good (ish). in fact, based on how most people here are acting like we should feel blessed that this isn’t a 77 win team, I apparently had higher expectations for this team going into the season than most. I thought they’d compete for the division.

I think my “negativity” comes from the fact that I think it’s ridiculous that the cubs, with their huge payroll and gigantic market, should need to suck/be mediocre in like 50% of their seasons. I can’t believe people are fine with that.

Absolutely not.

Yeah, Sewalds xFIP is a whole run higher vs lefties. Move probably makes a little too much sense for a dumb guy like Ross

I remember when we were tracking the record needed to get to 90 wins and it almost seemed like a very possible achievement at one point. Just need to go 12-2 to get there now

Couple things

1. ‘most’ people don’t think that. Thats kinda the whole motivating factor of me originally doing this. It’s rampant negativity in here, pretty regardless of what’s going on in the actual game.

2. after this stretch of gross baseball, we’re on an 85 win pace. That’s in line or ahead of most people’s predictions, the analytic predictions, etc. It’s certainly not the 100 win pace team that we saw for like 6 weeks (which is kinda when everyone started paying attention again), but then again, it never really was that team.

3. Won’t disagree on your big picture complaints. But kinda seems more like a general discussion frustration than, like, a ‘what a bunch of horsefeathers losers’ conversation when we go down 3-1 in the fourth inning. Also worth pointing out that, this year especially, we are not unique in this problem (Sox and Yankees back 20 games of Tampa and Baltimore, Mets and braves)

Out of curiosity do you notice this rampant negativity outside of the game threads?  Is it as prevalent?  You are fighting a crusade that thousands of message board posters have fought over the last 20 years trying to correct the behavior of those who lose rationality during the middle of a game they are emotionally attached to.

I’ve posted at dozens of sports boards over the last 20 years and I’ve seen this type of discussion in just about every one of them. I’m not saying you shouldn’t speak your mind, just saying you aren’t going to convince a bunch of people to not use a message board game thread as an emotional outlet.

red sox, yankees and mets have either a) had more recent success than the cubs b) are not as far into the current regime as the cubs and/or c) horsefeathers canning the people responsible for making the team suck.

IF the cubs blow this (still leaning toward thinking they won’t), it seems insane to me that they’d give ross a FIFTH season to try to win ONE playoff game. I mean do the friggin royals or pirates let a manager stick around that long without winning anything??

I think Ross is a bad manager but he's not the sole reason for this teams mediocrity.

Hoyer has built this roster by waiting on the final player in the group to have to settle for the best offer from the Cubs. Everyone wants to talk about how in hindsight he made the right decision to sign Swanson. I guess people forget this journey could and should have started a year earlier and that Corey Seager guy is pretty good.

The difference between preseason projections and now is that no one expected Cody Bellinger to be this good offensively any more. He'll be gone next year. Stroman will likely opt out even though he probably isn't looking at getting as big of a deal as he was in the first half, he still should easily top a 1 year contract. Hoyers big deadline acquisition will be gone, and it wasnt that big to begin with.

The Cubs are run by a man afraid of his own shadow. He talks about building a sustainable winner for the future but he'll be going into his 4th offseason now looking for the same damn positions sans SS because he's done nothing to put a sustainable player in these positions. He's afraid of signing a big money contract when he's got the Chicago Cubs bankroll and he's afraid to trade prospects with a manager that's afraid to play them.

Now who's gonna remind Ross about that?

With Candelario on the IL, unless I'm missing someone its either him, Mastrobuoni or Wisdom at 3B.  Might as well stick with the guy that is putting up solid defensive numbers,

Edit: I guess Morel has played 3B too so maybe he could start there when Seiya is healthy enough to play the field (I'm assuming health is a reason he was moved from RF to DH right before the game last night).  But then who is your DH?
