Basically if a player is in the system they can find a way to get him in the playoff roster. The system can be manipulated so that PCA (as an example, since so many are worried about him not being on the playoff roster) can take the place of an injured guy and be put on the playoff roster. Not a big deal to. It be in the 40 man as of September 1st.

Considering how bad the Cubs right handed bats are against lefties, Canario makes some sense. Maybe he gets a start against a lefty.

Isn't injury-replacement how K-Rod got to pitch for the Angels back in 2002?

That was the main guy I was thinking of when I was wondering if we’ll actually hear something today.

I assume we would’ve used the same loophole to get Nico on the playoff roster had we made it in 2019.

Padres are pretty much worthless.

Yeah no help from the Padres or Nats tonight.  Not particularly huge games but still

Don’t have a specific name in mind, but kinda wish they would have delayed the Canario call up until after todays DH and brought up another pitcher in the event wicks or Greene needs to get pulled early. Wicks ended up with an incredible start but it was pretty close to a disaster in the first. Can’t give him an endless leash given his long term importance and the importance of these games, but really don’t want to need like 12 innings from the bullpen today with two more games still left in the series and no day off in sight.

Don’t you get an extra spot on the day you play a doubleheader?

I’m not sure, but I believe there is a limit for pitchers you can have in the team. And I believe the Cubs are at that limit. If a pen arm with options is used to eat innings they can always send that guy down and bring up Boxberger or someone else. Maybe Kay goes 2 innings or something and then Cuas comes back from bereavement leave, as well.

Correct, you can't exceed 14 pitchers so one of the 2 call ups has to be a hitter.  You could in theory call someone up for game 1 insurance then option them for Greene for game 2, but I don't think it could be Rucker since he hasn't been down 10 days, which means it's either Estrada, Kilian, Boxberger, or adding someone to the 40 man just to do that Grandpa Simpson maneuver for a day.

It was close to a disaster, but it was also his very first inning in the bigs. I'm not concerned. He got the yips out of the way and now he's got some great confidence going into this next start.

That rule applies until 8/31. Starting 9/1, because of the extra two September call ups, you don’t get the extra roster spot for double headers.

I really don't know how the voters are looking at the NL Cy Young race.

If you're a winning % person, you're looking at Steele and Strider

If you're a strikeout person, it's Strider all day

If you're an ERA person, it's Steele

If you're a fWAR person, it's Zach Wheeler

If you're a "best pitcher on the best team" person, it's Strider

Not trading for and subsequently signing Mookie was an enormous failure of 28 teams. Dude is unreal. He is realistically about as good of a player that you are ever going to have a chance to acquire. He would have put the Cubs right back on top of the NL. It really grinds my gears that he is a Dodger for another decade.
