Losing by 1 with Swanson, Suzuki, Candelario due up and a potential superstar hitter (fromwhatIhear) right after them

imagine this if you can: winning by 2 with Swanson, Suzuki, Candelario due up and whatever other stuff you said.

Pat and Ron are talking about miggy. I was living in S. Florida when he came up with the Marlins. Even at 19 he could hit the ball hard. They had nowhere to play him. Fortunately Todd Hollingsworth was so awful they put Miggy in LF. And he was as responsible as anyone on that team for helping them to win the WS. If it weren’t for Hollingsworth being useless they would never have called him up.

And then the Cubs signed him that offseason 😂

Still in play, believe it or not

Edit: Ooops, read it wrong. Why assume? Because we’re angry at starting Smyly in place of other terrible if not impossible options? Pass

You do realize Wicks didn't HAVE to start on the 18th, right?  I'm not saying he should have been the guy tonight, but you keep making a point that is completely irrelevant because he wouldn't have been on short rest if the Cubs wanted him to make the start.

Theyll need to decide something fast as far who will be their next starter cause they'll need someone for Sunday and then they have a doubleheader that Friday, so someone or two will likely be coming up.

I would, again, disagree that he hasn't been that good and think he's actually looked really great at times, especially over his last few starts.  He striking out about a hitter per inning, and his swinging strike has been going up.  Over his last 19 IP, he's got a K% of 22%, which is pretty good.  The fastball has some really good movement to it (mitigating the velocity a bit) and his changeup is a legit plus-plus pitch.  Then add in the high number of GB's for a Cubs defense who is among the very best in baseball when it comes to ground balls, and I think it's a pretty good combination.

I'll remain on record; Jordan Wicks is where I'd go if I needed 4 solid innings at the MLB level.  I wouldn't count on him to get much more, maybe a 5th, but I wouldn't count on Wesneski, Killian or Smyly to get me more than 4 either.  The 6 day rest thing isn't great right now, and I'd buy that being a bit of a speed bump, so I'll concede on that point.

I guess the disconnect for me is that I don't think this is particularly good?  It's basically the bare minimum of what we'd expect of a AAA pitcher with serious MLB aspirations, and we're getting to it by slicing his already minimal AAA time in half.  And this is in the context of a guy pitching once a week and who hasn't hit 90 pitches all year(notably, he's been pulled earlier than pitch count would imply in a couple of these strong recent starts), it just doesn't strike me as a realistic expectation that he can be a functional MLB starter immediately in a playoff chase.

Damn, I wonder if Seiya could have scored if it didnt deflect off the wall

I think there would've been a shot if it hadn't gone straight to the fielder. Some bad luck in that inning. Scoring 8 runs is tough.

Is there someone in Tennessee that older(24-26) and has pitched well as of late that could get a jump for a 4-5 inning start against the Pirates ?
