Well that's a bummer. Great job by the offense. Strong bullpen performance. Just tough to win games when you're throwing out a starter who's been bottom of the barrel for a while now. Giving away games like this in the middle of a pennant race can come back to haunt you. The Drew Smyly in the rotation experiment had better be horsefeathers over now.  Take the series tomorrow.

believe that’s the third game recently that has ended with happ making the final out representing the tying run with the MVP candidate standing on deck

100% I'd be starting Smyly tonight. The field wasn't even informed enough to know or curious enough to Wicks' schedule and I'm supposed to follow that? Then doubling down on it saying the Cubs could have just known to schedule Wicks in advance? Or start the terrible Wesneski, a RH Smyly with 93 + breaking ball guy? It's insanity, I love game threads

Yes, how could the Cubs have possibly anticipated the guy with a 7.33 ERA over the last two months is terrible and maybe a move should be made to have someone else make the start. How could they possibly have foreseen this?

I'm told batting order doesn't matter

Not getting the bullpen up sooner and keeping Smyly way too long in this game cost them and sets them up for a series loss tomorrow . Skubal is throwing the ball really well .

Phillies walk off the Giants.

I think that guarantees that the Cubs will remain in a playoff spot tonight. Even if Arizona and Miami win and tie up the Cubs, the Cubs will be percentage points ahead of Arizona, though Miami will win the H2H tiebreaker thus jump into WC2

Smyly starting wasn’t the issue, it was trying to force him through the 4th after we got the lead.

Good thing Hoyer extended Happ for 20 mil a year

I have never been a Happ fan, and even less so this season, but his contract is well down the list of signings to complain about.  He probably shouldn't be batting third, but he's a solid enough player and he will likely be fine over the life of his deal.

Yeah that honestly irks me more than starting Smyly.  I have no idea when pitchers started getting warm that inning but after watching him the first 3 innings, I would have had a really short leash.  I get it...Ross needs him to eat innings.  But Smyly had nothing tonight and the Cubs still managed to lead the game.  I get that it sounds reactionary, maybe in another timeline Smyly gets a ground ball there.  Or Bellinger scoops up Candelario's throw before that.  Either way, by that point Smyly seemed like a blowup waiting to happen and it happened.

That's generally what teams do with the SP! Would they be pulling Not Smyly in the same situation? Why?

Depends, does Not Smyly have a 9.41 ERA in his previous 8 starts and already allowed 4 runs and 9 baserunners in the first 3.1 IP?

You act like no starting pitcher in the history of ever has had a short leash due to a very poor stretch of pitching or was pulled early in a game where they are getting hit hard and often.  The fact that both applied to Smyly doesn't cancel them out.

I think spending 20 mil on a cof struggling to put up any slug is a failure. He'll be the 10th highest paid outfielder next year and his wrc+ is barely top 50 for outfielders.

Typically teams in a race try to win games.

I was thinking they’d use Smyly/Wesneski to get through 6ish. Thought Smyly would be pulled after we took the lead, let a runner on, or 2 runners on. Heck even after he gave up the homer he faced 2 more batters. It was dumb.

Agree to disagree I guess..

I don't disagree, but his skillset still plays on a Major League roster.  He's not an ideal corner outfielder to be sure, but his 20 Million isn't going to kill them over the next 3 seasons.  I'm much more concerned over the accumulation of bad deals like Taillon, Smyly, Barnhart, Mancini.

This can’t be right but I’m too lazy to check.

Whoa.

Yeah, but about half of the comments weren’t really relevant after the third inning. It was was like trying to watch a movie with a couple of people continuously talking about the opening scene.

It's way to convenient when your options seem to be anyone in existence who isn't Drew Smyly, who would do amazing in this must win because they're not Drew Smyly's latest 15 minutes, and I'm stuck with Drew Smyly during his latest 15 minutes. Obviously if there was actually a better option available for the 2023 Cubs on 8/22 then yay but I'm all for it, but if anyone was being honest we all know this Wesneski/Wicks nonsense is because one foot's still out the door for 2023 to many still

Tom you’re being ridiculous. Of course literally anyone else the Cubs could have pitched tonight would have pitched a perfect game.

Reflecting back on happier times, remember when Drew Smyly almost threw a perfect game?  Remember that? That was awesome.

I know he still pitched ok for a bit after that but I'm going to pretend Yan Gomes ruined him.
