by pretty much every indication, the cubs are going to the luxury tax or above it. which means they're adding a ton this offseason. we have every logical reason to believe this. you're just pouting.

Im not at all. You’re being an aggressive little snot for some reason and I don’t appreciate it. I’ve been down on Jed for years. I think he’s great at building a farm and beyond mediocre everywhere else. If I was pouting and mad I’d be a lot less rational and not saying things like “I hope you’re right and I’m wrong”.

Which, again, I hope you are. So please, either speak to me like an adult or not at all.

nobody is being aggressive. I said you sound like you need a break because you're being overly pessimistic about the cubs for no reason other than missing out on ohtani. the whole "we didn't get the top guy, so obviously we are doing nothing this offseason" just gets really tiring every year.

they have a quality roster with lots of money to spend this offseason and a top farm system to work with. I'm on board with hating ownership as much as anyone, and I'm very annoyed that we keep whiffing on the elite, but the cubs are in a very good position going forward.

You've definitely got good reason to be pissed the Cubs are once again missing out on the top of the FA market. The way Hoyer talks certainly doesn't help optimism either. Personally I expect the Cubs to make some solid improvements via trade and atleast go into the season as division favorites. It's hard to remain optimistic given their recent track record but I think all signs are pointing to going back into the tax this year. They need to save face a little and lure in some customers for the stand alone streaming. I'd bet there's still some genuine excitement to come this offseas0n.

everyone is pissed we are missing out on the top guys. that doesn't mean that they are punting the offseason.

Correct, but it does make the margin for error significantly smaller

I'd agree. Although personally I don't give them any credit for trying this year. They could have been trying to trade for or sign stars that last half decade and they didn't. Now they might be interested again but you can't automatically win these battles just because you decided to try again. Who knows if having a winning team on the field the last couple years could have influenced Ohtani in our direction. Punting or not, now they're on Plan B ro C and Hoyer has some wheeling and dealing to do. Hopefully he's up for it.

Yeah, I know people are likely to be very frustrated that we missed on Ohtani and I get that. Me? Truthfully, I’m more annoyed that we decided Yamamoto is too expensive for us. They preach and preach “intelligent spending” this and “paying for future performance not past” that, but when a 25 year old ace is available he’s too “expensive” for us.

It’s dimwitted and embarrassing. But hey, we’ll probably acquire nice and safe (contract wise) Tyler Glasgow.

I'm dubious about the press conference too.  I've seen 7pm ET and 6pm ET but it makes no sense to have a PC without a physical and unless they did the physical in LA or Florida last week, I don't see how they can make an official announcement today.

Cant wait for him to have an opt-out after 2 years and we can do this all again soon.

Maybe by then Jed will be allowed to use all his savings from not hitting the payroll number Tom gives him and we can make him a competitive offer

I'm fine with Ohtani going to the Blue Jays, but the thing that is mildly annoying is that this was seemingly a winnable negotiation.  If he would have gone to the Dodgers, then we probably assume it was going to be the Dodgers all along for various reasons, but what does Toronto have that Chicago doesn't?

Oh man I will laugh so hard if he signed for like 2/150

Frankly I hope he keeps getting opt-outs after one year and this can be MLB's off-season kickoff. Every year we huddle around twitter creepin' on Ohtani's travels to figure out which MLB franchise he signs with this time. Spoiler alert, every year the Dodgers are the favorite and he never picks them.

Hard Knocks can eat their heart out. Sho-Time is here to stay. Coming soon to STARZ.

Well I think that's officially it.  Bummer. Might have to catch some Jays games this year. I think it'd be fun to see them take over the East for a bit. Hopefully Hoyer is working hard on something unexpected and Hoskins is like our 4th or 5th best addition heading into the season.

Yamamato would have been nice.

A more recent history of winning. A better team. A whole country rooting for him. I think most people without bias would probably take Toronto over Chicago in this situation. The only big drawback is the tough division but there's probably some fun in the challenge of trying to take over the East. He'll be be quite the canadian hero if they start winning that division.

No way.  Tom is saving up to buy the Diner Grill.

Sucks but no one will ever really know the truth outside of Ohtani and his agent.

-Maybe the Cubs were just leverage?

-Maybe he didn’t want to hit/pitch in the cold Mar/Apr months?

-Maybe the Cubs lowballed him

Whatever it is I’m ready to move on and see if Jed can build on last year’s team.

I am not pissed at Jed for not getting Ohtani. It was an uphill battle and we lost. Maybe Ohtani likes a little less media attention so he went with Toronto over Chicago. Jed can’t do anything about that. Where I have concern is Jed’s comment about winning the off season. To me he is telling the fan base he isn’t winning the off season. So, more of the same from last year. I don’t doubt he will put a competitive team one the field next year. I am just worried he won’t put a 90+ win team on the risks. Between the comment about winning the off season and him hinting that he doesn’t want to block minor league talent, it doesn’t give me a lot of hope he plans on being aggressive. Hopefully he can be agbresssive and still not block young talent. But I am concerned.
