TDIL: Jay Cuttler is the Bears all-time passing leader. lol

Wide Receiver leaders are almost as awful as QB. The all time receiving leader for the Bears is Johnny Morris from 1958-1967 at 5059 yards. That's the lowest in the NFL for a franchise leader. The 3rd worst franchise is the Titans/Oiler at 7935 yards. Then of course number one is Jerry Rice at 19247. 5059 is so pitifully low that 26 year old DJ Moore would already be the franchise's leader receiver at 5201 receiving yards.

Cole Kmet getting paid.  I like Cole but interesting choice for first Bears player extended this season.

IDK I thought he was pretty clearly the most obvious extension guy.  Jaylon Johnson and Mooney are in a weird spot with the injuries and lack of production  last year and they probably think they can do better if they play out this season.

Yeah, Kmet was the leader in the clubhouse in terms of extension talks. Not a surprise. Dollar figure might be, but $12.5 m per is a step down from the top guys in the 15-17 range. Very fortunate timing for Kmet. Hopefully he really steps up this season

Nothing would surprise me from Fields this season. He could play himself out of a job or into the MVP and I would say "yeah, that doesn't surprise me."

My guess is he has a good enough season that his status as a no. 1 QB isn't in doubt

Man Fields doesn't even need to be an elite passer this year to be super valuable. Just be an above average passer with that elite athletic ability and you already have something really exciting there.

I mean if he totally wants to ball out I'm ok with that as well just don't want to get too hyped.

Kmet was flashing some YAC ability last year and solid TD production. I don't think he's done developing either.

I was not a big fan of Kmet 2 years in but there enough flashes and production last year for me to be fine with this.

If he can complete short and intermediate passes it opens up the entire field for both running and long passes. That's what he needs to learn. It's not really a secret but I'll be damned if they haven't figured it out.

Yep.

Just hit the lay ups.

Moore, Mooney, Claypool and the rookie gives Fields speed, size and the ability to get open. Kmet and Tonyan (assuming Tonyan is back to 100%) at TE will make it hard for any of the previous guys mentioned to get doubled up. Any RB's (that can catch the ball out of the backfield will just be added bonus. I see an explosive offense. The question will be whether Fields can see it and then execute it.

I think the running game will be just as good as last year, if not better. In other words, I don't really see a drop off in production from Montgomery to Foreman/Herbert/Johnson with the potential improvement on the line and the passing threat.

It's the defense that might take awhile to gel. But, I kinda like that we might actually have a QB that can reach 4000 yards passing or the first time in my life.

I wouldn't consider Jalen Hurts an elite passer, but I he put up an MVP level season last year. Like was said, get the ball out, take the easy yards from guys running after the catch. Intermediate throws he was already the best in the league (10-19 yards). Deep ball is likely good enough going to healthy Mooney and Moore instead of Pettis, Velus, Harry and ESB. Just take the easy stuff, get to 65-66% completion like Hurts and he's a top QB in the league.

Agree on all the weapons and potential for big jump on offense. I really hope a goal of the offense is to limit Fields as a ball carrier as much as the scheme allows. I understand that his run threat can be used to create lanes/space/mismatches, but we can't have him subject to the hits that come with it. He will get hit late, take cheap shots, eventually it will catch up with him. We have a whole stable of running backs to carry the load.

I think if he got 4-5 designed runs to maintain the look/threat, and used his mobility to buy time he'll have the chance at the 50 yard run to the house just like last year, but will also find an open man more than last year on the scramble drill.

I think 4-5 designed runs are too many even, depending on what type of runs they are. Obviously, if they are the Hurts pushed QB sneaks, that's fine. But if they are the Josh Allen, off tackle power run, then that's too much when you factor in scrambling when nobody is open or the pocket breaks down.

Cam Newton is the all time QB leading rusher, in terms of carries (Vick has the most yards); and he only averaged 7.5 carries per game. Figure 3-4 scrambles at least, so that gets Fields up to 7-9 per game. Ideally, the passing game and OL is good enough, to where he can just throw from the pocket and his running is just a supplement like at Ohio St

I’m all for zero designed runs for fields, but I think the coaching staff might starting reaching for that if the offense doesn’t click. Sort of a break glass measure that would be great to avoid. I guess I am just concerned that will be the go to play if things stagnate.
he’ll definitely get his yards scrambling if it’s there for the taking.

I'd be worried if they go to designed runs early in the season and dont let the Fields/new wr corps jell a bit

Was going to write something along those lines as well, I could see the offense not clicking immediately, may take some time.  Once it does, I believe we're going see an explosive offense, it'll be such that we've never seen as Bears fans.  No more boring 17-19 points, clock management, generate turnovers, etc. BS.

If you believe early training camp reports, the Fields to DJ connection is very real and very good early. I think when Mooney is full go, he will fit in seamlessly.  Everyone else may take a while to fit together, even the run game may not pick up where it left off with 4 OL in new spots, 3 new RBs and even Herbert in a lead role now. But it makes me feel good that the Fields/DJ connection seems like it can be solid enough to hold it down until everything else falls into place.
