Badgers just fired Paul Chryst. I guess that’s what you get when you lose to Illinois and the old coach.

Wisconsin fired Paul Chryst which seems kind of shocking to me.

The entire Big Ten West is 1-1 except Wisconsin who is 0-2. That Illinois-Iowa game could actually mean something

This seems shocking to me. Wisconsin is bad, and they had a downish season last year (though they recovered really nicely from a slow start) but I didn’t think he was particularly close to the hot seat just yet.

Last time both were unranked I think was the end of the 2014 season when OU went 8-5 and Texas was 6-7. I didn’t check each year but OU hasn’t lost more than 2 games in a season since then so they were probably ranked every week after that.

The natives were definitely restless but I thought he would get the season before any moves were made.

I’m hearing some crazy buyout numbers, who knows what’s true on that front.

To give an idea of just how long Illinois has been bad...

- They now have the longest AP poll drought in the country at 11 years (2011 was the last time they showed up in the poll, the last Zook year).

- They haven't finished the regular season with a winning record since 2007, when they beat #1 Ohio State to tie for the Big Ten championship (but Ohio State technically won the conference and went to the BCS while Illinois was stomped in the Rose Bowl by USC)

- They haven't actually won the conference since 2001 (Ron Turner), when they were beaten by LSU in the Sugar Bowl.

- The previous coach, Lovie Smith, was seen as a great hire and went 10-33 in conference in 5 seasons, going 0-1 in bowl games.

- Before that was the disastrous Tim Beckman era, where they went 4-20 in conference over 3 seasons (and still got one bowl game and lost it)

- Prior to that, Ron Zook actually made 3 bowl games, going 18-30 in conference over 7 seasons (0-2 in bowl games...though Illinois won their 2011 bowl game with an interim coach)

- Ron Turner, the last coach to win the conference, went 20-44 over 8 years of coaching (and 8 of those were the one year they won it)

- Lou Tepper before that was 17-21 in conference over 6 seasons.

And Ron Turner and Lou Tepper are fondly remembered among Illini fans as "the good old days".

EDIT: Bielema is now 5-6 in conference over a year plus, so he's caught Beckman already and is halfway to Lovie.

Illinois did not tie with Ohio State in '07, OSU went 7-1 and Illinois and Michigan went 6-2. We just went to the Rose Bowl because Ohio State was already taken by the BCS Championship as they still cared about having Big Ten teams back then, and had a 9-3 record vs. Michigan's 8-4 in the regular season. Michigan beat Illinois, but it was also the year they lost to App State when they were still FCS.

My memory is such that nothing after beating Ohio State in 2007 happened.

Until last Saturday.

I actually happy about it. I've never had much to do with the Illini other than born & raised in the state, but somehow it's a good thing for me anyway.

The next 3 games are against teams I'd love to see taken down (Iowa, MINNESOTA, and Nebraska).

That was the year they started off 6-0 before finishing the regular season 0-6. They still got to a bowl and beat the 6-7 UCLA team that had gotten into the PAC championship game only because USC was ineligible that year and then needed a special exemption from the NCAA to play in a bowl game with a losing record.

As for how bad Illinois has been, the true tale of the tape is the won-loss record.

Over the previous 10 seasons, Illinois is 69th out of the 70 current or soon to be P5 schools in winning percentage, ahead of only Kansas.

Over the previous 30 seasons, Illinois is 66th/70, in front of only Duke, Vandy, Kansas and Indiana.

Another way to look at it is the head-to-head records since 1992 against the Big 10 schools Illinois should historically be competitive with - Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Northwestern, Purdue and Michigan St:

NW 11-19

PU 8-16

WIS 6-20-1

IOWA 6-17

MINN 9-16

MSU 4-12

There is no historic or demographic reason for Illinois to have been dominated by each of these schools over the last 30 years. Illinois had a all-time winning record against all of these schools prior to 1992. The difference is that each of these schools made at least one great coaching hire in that time while Illinois repeatedly made bad ones.

1992, by the way, in addition to be a nice round 30 years ago, is also the point where John Mackovic left as football HC and AD. So, there was a clear change in administration at that time that coincides with Illinois’ downturn.

Seems to be the general consensus that the top 3 teams in the Big Ten are Ohio State, Michigan and Penn State and probably in that order.

My question is: who is the 4th best team in the Big Ten?

Candidates are probably Illinois, Maryland or Minnesota.

Illinois is playing the best football and their defense is legitimately good. Their best win is a solid win. Yes Wisconsin probably sucks, but Madison is still a hard place to come and win much less completely blow them out. Their loss was at Indiana which is not a great loss but could be worse

Maryland has only lost at Michigan, and they kept the game annoyingly close throughout. They looked good in that game. Their offense is good, their defense is not but still seems a little better than many expected. The problem is that their best win was either against MSU or SMU. MSU is in a free fall but SMU seems decent (they lost to undefeated TCU by 1 score after falling to Maryland)

Minnesota was likely many people's number 4s before last week. They pulverized their first 4 opponents, which included 2 P5 teams, but came home and lost to a decent Purdue team. Their defense remained really good even in the defeat but it was a bit deflating coming off the MSU road win (further devalued because MSU lost again the next week and clearly seems to not be good)

I could be talked into all 3 of them to be honest.

Hopefully 3 safeties to get that 6.

I was at the Illinois game when they kicked off that losing streak after starting 6-0. Ohio State won while completing 1 pass on the day. It was not bad weather. It also happened to be the worst OSU team since 1988.

Heard Chryst is very much anti-NIL, if you want to recruit and play with the big boys you must play the NIL game.

Alabama is going to destroy A&M. You know Saban has been waiting on this after Jimbo talked all that horsefeathers this off-season.

Starting QB Max Johnson has a broken bone in his hand and will be out for a while. Looks like Haynes King is back in.

OU getting bitch slapped up and down the field. Lincoln Riley made a timely exit from Norman it seems.

Well it could be that was well as Lincoln Riley is a good coach and took his star QB with him

Don't know that I've ever seen a box score where one team (OU) had five different players with a pass attempt
