It just sucks to suffer through an awful season to obtain a Top 10 draft pick and then spend it on a non-Top 10 talent. It's no Hayden Simpson, but there were better players available.

8:02 how did Horton, who had ~30 good innings in his entire college career, end up going this high ?

Eric A Longenhagen

8:03 His horsefeathers is great and his arm is fresh. He was a dude in HS, industry track record is longer than this spring. I'm in on him, though sounds like some clubs didn't like his medical.

Love this pick. What’s his name? What position does he play?

Always a good reminder that this board hated the Horner and Brennen Davis picks.

I remember a bunch of hate towards the Hoerner and Roederer picks, but not so much the Davis pick.

Cade Horton was ranked 12th by Fangraphs with a 45+ FV:

Horton, who ranked 52nd in our draft rankings in the fall, had a breakout sophomore campaign (he's age-eligible) after returning from Tommy John, and he is arguably the best college pitcher in a draft that dealt with an unusual rate of attrition among that demographic. His slider took an especially huge leap and has become a plus offering in the mid-to-upper-80s, featuring two-plane wipe. Horton will also use a low-80s curveball with more vertical shape to both get ahead of hitters and finish them off. He also has nascent feel for changeup location, not often imparting bat-missing movement on the cambio but locating it in the right area. Considering how few reps Horton has had, that pitch (all his pitches, really) has an extra bit of projection. He very comfortably has the repertoire depth and command to start, it's just that he's only thrown 53 total innings in college and there is rightfully less confidence in Horton's durability than there would be had he been healthy and pitched two entire seasons looking like this. That risk is counterbalanced by the possibility that he's just scratching the surface in literally every other area.

Horton was ranked 22nd by ESPN, also a 45+ FV:

22. Cade Horton (20.9), RHP, Oklahoma

Velo: 93-96 t98, Fastball: 50/55, Slider: 55/65, Curveball: 55/60, Changeup: 45/50, Command: 45/55

Horton was about 50 slots below this ranking at the end of the regular season -- then he went on a tear, dominating the whole postseason. He's ranked this high even post Tommy John because of how he looks when he does it (i.e., he looks like a starter), and he was exactly this kind of guy on the mound in high school. I think he'll want top half of the first round money because he might get that next year with a full dominating season, which means he might go anywhere from getting a slot bonus in the middle of the first, to overslot in the comp round, to getting $3 million after the third round, to not drafted at all.

Horton was ranked 23rd by BA:

23

Cade Horton

Oklahoma

RHP

Notes:

HT: 6-1 | Wt: 211 | B-T: R-R

Commit/Drafted: Never Drafted

Age At Draft: 20.9

BA Grade: 55/Extreme

Tools: Fastball: 65. Curveball: 55. Slider: 65. Changeup: 45. Control: 50.

Horton was a highly regarded high school prospect in the 2020 class, when he ranked as the No. 65 prospect on the BA 500 thanks to his two-way talents. Horton was a preseason All-American for his efforts on the mound and showed impressive ability as an infielder and hitter. On top of that, he was a standout high school quarterback who was committed to Oklahoma to play both sports. He went undrafted and made it to campus, and quickly started drawing rave reviews for his fall efforts in 2021. His 2021 season never happened, however, as Horton had Tommy John surgery. Now a draft-eligible sophomore, Horton didn’t get on the mound until late March—though he played plenty of third base and slashed .235/.323/.324 as a hitter—but he rocketed up draft boards with dynamic pitching performances and stuff that trended way up during the College World Series. Horton helped pitch the Sooners to the College World Series finals and in four June outings posted a 2.81 ERA while striking out 40 batters and walking just four. In June, he pitched with a 94-95 mph fastball that got up to 98 with high spin and impressive carry up in the zone. All of his pitches feature a high-spin profile, and he’s shown impressive feel to spin the baseball dating back to his prep days. He showed a harder slider in the mid 80s that got up to 90 mph late in the season, a pitch that earned double-plus grades and was used more frequently than his fastball. Horton will also throw a slower curveball around 80 mph, and that could be an above-average offering as well. He didn’t use a changeup much this spring, but he has a firm one in the upper 80s that flashes some downward movement and could be a real fourth pitch. Because Horton has just 53.2 innings under his belt, teams could vary on how far up the board they would select him, but he was getting consistent top-two round chatter in late June and plenty of scouts like his arm talent enough to put him in the first round.

I can tell a lot of posters here didn't watch him against CWS champions Ole Miss in the CWS.

FYI, he looked like Kerry Wood in his 20 strikeout game.

Just sayin'.

I think most people are smarter to judge players on more than 2 good weeks or 3 good starts. Well, maybe other than the people running the Cubs.

WTF. I don't know anything about this stuff, but this seems like an awful, awful, awful decision.

well you'll be pleasantly surprised to be proven wrong very soon methinks.

As I said, I saw this dude in person just a few weeks ago and he was as dominant as I've ever seen a pitcher in my life. 7.1 IP, 13 K, 0 walks, 2 hits against the national title winner. His slider is really freaking sharp and his spin rate metrics are through the roof. Plus he's already had Tommy John.

Here are his 13 K's if you wanna see some highlights of him. Lots of good looks at the befuddled faces of the hitters walking away.

Little and Howard were picked around where the publications’ ranked them so they were pretty well-liked.

If you’re trying to slam me or something for “defending” the org, I don’t have much of an opinion on the pick and know better to judge draft picks based on blurbs and videos.

Yes, if only they had the access to the info you have…

Like always, who knows. But he’s a high upside guy with low mileage who also isn’t miles away.

Longenhagen says people think now that Collier might slide far enough to go to school. Wonder if the Cubs could pull together enough scratch to get him at 47

If they went the discount route on Horton to go overslot at 2, I'm somewhat glad they went with a higher upside rather than safe.

With that said... With Lee there, you scrap those plans and go BPA.

If they sign both picks for slot, I'll be disappointed.

He was a top 75 prospect coming out of HS, despite being

a 2-sport star who didn’t focus on baseball. Had a huge fall camp his freshman year and then needed TJS. He didn’t come out of nowhere.

He was ranked as high as 12 by both Eric Longenhagen (FG) and Joe Doyle (Prospects Live).

Horton shouldn't be anywhere near slot, at least I'd hope.

He's got closer/back end of the bullpen written all over him. I don't know if that's what you want at 7.

It’s okay to just stop at “I don’t know anything about this stuff”.
