Another clunker for Kohl Franklin

He might need to go down to MB. I worry that he'll just be able to bully guys with his fastball, but at least he can stretch out and get some innings

3 run double by Caissie off the new pitcher. Pulled it.

Feels like Caissie starting to pull the ball in the air is his "Uh oh, Happy learned how to putt" moment

Both hits today were pulled. The several clips I've seen of his hits lately have largely seemed to be on slow breaking balls. Has he been smacking any fastballs? If so, all oppo, or can he pull a fastball, too?

Darius Hill is 4/4 for the Smokies with two doubles and a HR (6?!). More much younger Rafael Ortega than a true prospect at 24 I guess but there's some meat to his baseball bones:

- Today bumps his season in AA up to say .311/.360/.480 in 175 PAs

- Just drafted in 2019, he's already taken 450 PAs in AA (~.290/.350/.420)

- Drafted as a 21 YO fourth year senior, that group's usually 22, and started from 18-21 (avg college freshman is 19) at WVU. Just from what I've seen of college sports over the years there aren't many true freshmen starters, fewer of those at 18 not 19, and the same is true of "true" 21 YO seniors vs 22+

- Plays all 3 OF spots, been mostly corner guy in 2021-2022

- Flyballs at about 40% in those 450 AA PAs

I like that he and Maldonado aren't even really considered prospects, were drafted fairly recently, and are productive upper minors players already

Yeah, Hill is having a good season. Doesn't K a lot, but getting the HR's rolling this season is new and interesting. Not sure how much priority there is for a corner outfielder, and he's mostly played left. But any guys who can hit, it's kinda nice and difficult, and with the DH you can always use a guy who can hit. Keep it up, Hill! Doesn't seem his numbers are anomalously BABIP flukey or anything, either.

Assuming I calculated correctly, I think PCA has a .451 BABIP.

I love the way his season has gone, but he's not going to sustain that.

It was .450 entering today and he was 0 for 1 on BIP today so probably a shade under that. But yes, when you're hitting .372 that's gonna come with a very high BABIP. Hitting .370+ in a 160 PA sample is the noteworthy part of that, especially given his K rate and speed which would help support a high BABIP.

While .451 is obviously not sustainable, we have to remember that he basically has all the attributes that result in higher than normal babip being sustainable over time. He's in the minors where the defense is not great, he's very fast, he's left handed and he has a very high LD%. .451 isn't going to happen, but I think .360 to .370 and even a bit more is completely realistic while in the minors.

Caissie had a great week. May line is up to .339/.403/.571 (174 wRC+) in 63 PAs. 6.5% BB and 24.2% K. Definitely seems to be adjusting well. The fact that he's still only at a 93 wRC+ for the season shows just how miserable his April was.

also he did mostly nothing the first series-plus in May (.465 ops)

then after 5/9 off-day he's been on .395/.447/.698, 17 RBI in 12 games tear
