Eberflus seemed like the 2nd best of the defensive dudes after Flores. And Eberflus doesn't have the interpersonal and Deshaun Watson baggage (which may or may not be fair). So....this is fine? Underwhelming but definitely not bad.

Runs a Tampa 2 base though, right? I wonder what he'll aim to do with the defense here and if he'll consider keeping Desai around.

There's a good bit of the D hitting free agency, so he's got an opportunity to remake it in his image fairly quickly.

I kind of like Eberflus, but we have two first timers again and I did kind of want at least one of the roles to be experienced. Will be eager to see how both coach and exec staff get built out.

Rod Marinelli back as DC?

He's a first time HC but a longtime coach who is 51 years old. I don't think inexperience will be an issue.

Well many were excited about Nagy, we know how that turned out, whereas, many are not excited about Eberflus. So, maybe, this will turn out to be successful? I know, I'm just grasping at straws here but, it sure doesn't come off as a good hire.

So we had Pollian and the Bears do a coaching search and we ended up with a Colts coach that is related through marriage to the McCaskeys

Edit: nevermind, I guess he's is a married to A McCaskey not THE McCaskeys

She's a tupperware employee in ohio, I think it's fair to say she's not that connected to THE FAMILY.

I was excited about Nagy because he came from the offensive side of the ball and wanted the Bears to have a good offense for the first time in my life. We just hired the wrong guy. I still desperately wanted an offensive guy because I want a good offense fo rthe first time in my life. Doesn't mean we can't have one with this hire, but it would have had been exciting to have our own McVey/Shanahan/Taylor to look forward to instead of an OC who in a best case scenario will only be here 1 season. (best case because if you hire someone who can make the bears offense good for the first time since the T formation, you deserve multiple HC offers)

I got excited because that would have been peak Bears for it to be true

That's possible.

It's also possible that Quinn was the guy and bowed out (I believe he was still supposed to interview with NYG before he withdrew his name from all).

I don't have any problems with Eberflus after it was obvious that Daboll wasn't going to happen. With that said, this OC search is going to be absolutely huge. They need to hit a homerun on this hire.

It's the biggest hire to make. In a best case scenario we are looking for another OC next offseason because anyone who can make the Bears offense look good is going to get heavy HC consideration next year lol

Eberflus was one of my top 5 in this process. I don't know a whole lot about him, but much like has been said about Poles, I think he's a guy that has a lot of support around the NFL and there's confidence that he can lead a team. Really surprised the Bears didn't go with experience at either GM/HC spot. I hope they go experience at OC.

He's certainly got a long track record in the NFL. Maybe he's built up the relationships needed to tag a solid OC.

Obviously, when I look at the results from the Nagy regime, just because an offensive guy is hired doesn't mean it is going to result in good offense. Nor does hiring a guy with QB coach experience mean it will result in good QB play. But Daboll's resume in this area was pristine and we desperately need Fields to succeed. So I'm bummed that we didn't hire Daboll. He may have just not wanted to come here.

Not after Adam Gase.

At this point, if Caldwell doesn't settle for the job, I'd say just go with another hot young candidate.

Getting Caldwell at OC would be great. I'd no longer be underwhelmed. Probably not overwhelmed either, but very sufficiently whelmed. I wonder how realistic it is?

Same here. I think its possible. Caldwell currently isn't coaching anywhere and I don't believe he's a candidate anywhere else. He could be thinking that if he's not a HC he'll just retire, but I believe he was lined up as an OC somewhere before this year before backing down due to health issues. The Bears did seem impressed with his offensive plan, so they might be able to work something out.

Honestly, after the mess that was Nagy running/not running the offense, I'm less gung-ho about needing an offensive-minded head coach.

Head coach just needs to be a guy that can manage a bunch of other talented guys on staff and is willing to listen to them.

Just that would be a significant upgrade.

Caldwell isn't likely getting a HC position, so yeah, that would be a great fit for the Bears. Wasn't he the one gushing the most about Fields?

But I think you are basing your opinion too much on one failed hire. Look at 3 examples that worked out well in this weekend's conference championship games.

That said I definitely don't think the Bears HAD to make an offensive hire for it to work out...I just would have preferred knowing that we had a coach that has developed great QBs in the past. And no Matt Nagy developing Mahomes doesn't count

Marc Trestman was also an offensive minded coach that didn't exactly work out well.

It's far more important to get an offensive coach that can run a quality offense and whom the HC allows to run that quality offense.

We'll see who's hired at OC, etc. hopefully soon, for me and this setting a very low bar, if we see a Bears offense that's able to overcome some negative plays and keep the drive alive. That may mean they're trending upwards on offense, basically, for my lifetime, I've never seen a Bears offense that was able to overcome the occasional negative play. Certainly, through the whole of Nagy' time you knew a negative play was end of that offensive possession.

And Marc Trestman was out of the league for a decade before Emery picked him off of the scrap heap. And inherited an established QB, not one that has a ton of promise but needs developing.

Again, I don't think the Bears hiring a defensive HC means the offense will suck or Fields cant be developed (for example McDermott/Daboll worked out quite well for Allen), I just would have preferred bringing in an offensive guy with a track record of developing QBs as its the thing that Bears need the most right now. But its very possible they find that guy as an OC

Yeah but (unlike Nagy) Marc Trestman was a clown ass totally out of left field hire from a mile away. It was never exciting and it never made any sense.

(I don't disagree with the points you're making despite my strong preference for an offensive HC and continuity and consistency of approach on offense)
