Is it common for an NFL team to hire a GM and a coach? Shouldn’t the GM pick the coach? What if the Bears hire a GM, aren’t set on the coach, and then the newly hired GM doesn’t like the new coach?

I had no idea that even as far back as Angelo's hiring they used an outside firm to assist in the search.

Are we the only team that does this?

Most probably do. There are certainly cases where a coach gets hired first. I would say most often it's established former Head Coaches who might get hired before a GM.

@PFF_Brad (Twitter handle) had one of those Twitter spaces the other night and talking about league structures indicated that despite what order they were hired in, it's probably close to 50% of teams where the coach is really the top of the football ops. And his personal opinion was he hated that structure.

Fow whatever it's worth McCaskey said that was his preference. And I wouldn't necessarily worry too much about them interviewing head coaches now. There is a narrow window for any playoff coaches to interview if their team ends up making a long playoff run. So hopefully all these coach interviews are short introductory screenings and provide some advance work for any GM and a serious interview would still occur with any of their top candidates.

Saw an interview with Dungy last night as well and he was pretty adamant teams take their time and not worry about being first to hire and missing on candidates. And based on the candidate pool I can't say I disagree. There isn't a single coach name I'm absolutely enamored with above all others.

McCaskey said he prefers GM first and GM hires coach, correct?

Yes, sorry that was worded confusing.

McCaskey would prefer GM first. But if they felt they had a coach they loved they would consider. Couldn't say what that circumstance would be but they'd know when they saw it.

i took it as, if Harbaugh or Payton was realistic, they’d do it and figure out the GM later. For most candidates they’d rather the GM be the deciding factor.

Bye Flores

I like Flores and his ability to maximize talent but his burning thru OCs is too big of a risk, IMO.

Daboll just needs to run the tape of this game for his interview tomorrow lol.

Seriously can you imagine a better way to walk into an interview?

Bears Twitter all about Daboll right now. Always been cautiously optimistic with him. Can't lie Fields would be a great fit for what he was running today, but Fields doesn't quite have Allen's arm.

I'm glad there's hype on Daboll and not Leslie Frazier

The bears are the best open coaching location

Daboll will interview and makes all the horsefeathering sense

Raw remains cautious

I'm teasing, I'm back to the guy who I felt the best about at the beginning of all of this. I think the question now is, will McCaskey agree? This could end beautifully

Yea, the Bills look amazing

Personally I think this is the exactly why it was a great decision by George to have Ted involved in the interview process. It would be an easy mistake for a "football fan" like George to look at the last three years and see Josh Allen's steady improvement. Due to recency bias a "football fan" might put to much weight on tonight's game where Buffalo's offence scored TD's on their first seven possessions. But thankfully we should be able to rely on Ted's ability to see through this mirage and see the obvious truth which should be apparent to a "football evaluator."

Daboll clearly isn't a good play caller. Just look at the last series for Buffalo's offence. Three straight rushes for -2 yards. Not only were the results bad but in the NFL everyone watches film and scouts the other team's tendencies. You know the Patriots had to have been ready for what was coming. Then to make matters worse he called the exact same play two more times. That's the exact same play three times in a row! In an NFL playoff game no less. Oh, and who was the QB for these three plays? Yup, you guessed it. Mitch Trubisky. Even Matt Nagy got more production from Trubisky then that.

But don't worry Bears fans Ted's input will save us from these kind of mistakes.

Daboll is more interesting than another student of a great coach. Don’t get me wrong, he worked under Belichick and Reid but he’s not being plucked right from there. He is the OC for a defensive minded head coach so presumably should get a ton of credit for the Bills offense. It just seems like a really nice fit, but I suspect there will be multiple teams that are hot after him and the McCaskeys will probably end up falling in love with Caldwell’s leadership or something and another team will want him more.

I think the cautiousness comes from the Nagy experience. Offensive coordinator. Unsure about his leadership ability. Unsure about his ability to call plays with all the other duties as a first time head coach. Unsure about his ability to delegate without meddling.

But the difference is that Daboll isn't running his version of his HCs offense. Daboll didn't only call plays for 6 games and maybe a playoff game. He's been running his offense for several years and has extensive experience under different regimes. He also has developed a QB and developed an offense perfectly geared toward said QB along the way.

I'd say I've gone from more cautious to now more optimistic after last night. Not that 1 game really should matter that much (because what happens with a dud next week), but this was a perfect game against a top 5 defense. But like defensive coaches where so much depends on the OC hire, so much with Daboll depends on who he surrounds himself with if he can't continue to do all he does in additional to running the entire team.

I'm not worried about multiple teams being hot for Daboll perhaps, for the first time ever, the Bears are the pick of the litter, the job everyone wants. While Fields doesn't have Allen' arm or size he's probably a little faster than Allen, I really liked what I saw of Daboll' offense yesterday, most especially against a well coached opponent with a top defense. I look upon Bears - Packers being similar to Bills - Patriots, Bills are starting to flip the cycle, think the Bears have chance to do that in near future.

Yeah unless he’d really just like to be in Miami for the climate/culture/lifestyle and they offer him a ton more. The Bears and Jags seems like the only two teams he should consider, imo, from a football perspective. Can do a lot of Allen things with both Fields and Lawrence (think he deserves a pass for the year with that horsefeathers show) plus the Jags have a ton of picks and cap space. Both divisions aren’t particularly good either, especially if Rodgers leaves.
