He plays RF so hopefully he’ll be able to step in after we trade Heyward. Oh please god.
Heyward isn't going anywhere, but I'm ok with him taking all Happ's at bats.

I'd rather see Happ get regular playing time in these meaningless games. Heyward can sit on the bench until his contract is up.

Heyward is atrocious. Happ makes less than 20% of JHey and is a little less productive. That’s not saying much.

Happ is also 26 and was really good last year. I'd let him get as many AB's as possible down the stretch to see if he can figure it out. Wins and losses are meaningless, if anything losing games and getting a top 10 pick should be a priority.

I don't mind the age that bad. Injuries and COVID are obviously factors there. That said, Deichmann is what he is - a corner OF with above average power but a questionable hit tool. I think it's positive that he's shown far better discipline this year, so maybe there are some legitimate changes, but his offensive profile feels like Adam Eaton in a positive scenario.

Is Deichmann and whoever the 2nd piece okay for a pen arm that's likely to jump back into FA next year? Probably. Is Deichmann likely to be some asset in our next core? Unlikely, but I guess not impossible, depending on how fast the rebuild goes. I probably would've preferred two lottery tickets with upside, but all the trades so far, it seems like most teams are trying to balance the risk out in some fashion, which is understandable, but I'd rather see the Cubs gamble on upside and pay for stopgap role players.

If you buy Deichmann as more than a 4th OF, then it's a fairly good trade. I'm not sure I'm there, so I'm more curious who the other name is.

I get it, but I have also never been convinced of Happ being anything more than a fourth outfielder.

He's probably just a strong side platoon bat...but also might be one hell of one?

Vs Left - .186/.279/.288, 11.8% BB 32.4% K

Vs Right - .345/.487/.515, 21.7% BB 19.6% K

It's possible. I'm just not sure how "real" everything is in terms of his statistics this year. We'll have to wait and see I guess.

The interesting thing on those splits is how his K/BB numbers are so dramatically split apart.

Okay - now I'm a big fan of the trade. High floor, upper level guy + High ceiling, big arm guy.

Very nice return for a non-closer that any team could have signed for a couple mil back in January.

Chafin told David Ross on his way off the field, "One bad outing and I get traded." Gotta love that guy.

lol - that's awesome

Any idea of his injury history? Made his pro debut on 6/15. Looks like a piggybacker.

I like the grades on his fb and cu though.

Fangraphs makes it sound like a late signing and no injuries

Palencia was signed in February of 2020, so it was technically the 2019 signing period, and of course we had no season in which to evaluate him. He came out in 2021 Extended throwing huge heat in just an outing or two before he was sent to Stockton not long before list publication. He was 97-99 in those outings. Palencia is a squat young man with a longer arm action, but he has feel for creating bat-missing breaking ball depth, and he obviously has a huge arm. There is less track record here than is typical for most 21-year-old prospects but Palencia has a long developmental runway because he only just signed. He’s an exciting prospect because of his arm strength and breaking ball, but the rest is still out of focus because industry exposure has been limited to just a few innings.

I can't say that I've ever heard someone 5'11" 160 described as "squat."

I'm guessing the listed weight is...inaccurate.

Ok, thanks for this. That's good news. Seems like a good trade, though Deichmann's shrinking ISO is a little disconcerting. Clearly a platoon bat ATM but we'll see what the future holds and if that huge production vs RHP translates I won't have any complaints.

Can't complain about the deal at all. I am mildly curious why he signed so late in the cycle, but that's irrelevant. Still not sure what I really feel on Deichmann, but only time will tell.

As a side note, boy, the A's system seems like it's fairly old for the level types. Obviously, circumstances, but it sure looks that way on paper. I wonder if all systems look that way now and I just never thought about it this year.

Happ is so much more than a 4th outfielder. He's a podcaster a coffee entrepreneur and art dealer too
