Why Your Team Sucks: Chicago Bears 2021 Edition

you can bypass the paywall if you open incognito, but defector is worth paying for imo.

This one hurt in multiple ways:

We will wait too long to start Justin Fields and get like six great games out of him before he tears one ACL and has the other shot out by the CPD in a Portillo’s drive thru.

Some pretty great reader emails in there, and then the top comment is fantastic.

"Ryan Pace should be the fourth best salesman at a Dallas-area Mazda dealership"

"The team is moving to Arlington Heights so they can tap into an even wider range of obese Midwesterners dying for the opportunity to be run over by one of Mike Ditka’s drunk kids."

Posted

"The owners are a set of geriatric fail children who are also poster children for a 100% inheritance tax. The fans live under the delusion that this team is still (or ever really was) a giant of the league, despite one Super Bowl victory that’s old enough to have heart problems and a bad back.

Oh and horsefeathers Brian Urlacher. Go get another barbed wire tattoo with a hepatitis infected needle, you Trump humping [expletive]. You’re not fooling anyone with those hair plugs."

You gotta work REAL hard to have your horsefeathers ruined by Lori Lightfoot. Lori Lightfoot is a flat-brained penguin who spends every day busting her ass to earn the title of Worst Mayor In America. And she succeeded Rahm, mind you. Meanwhile the Bears are like DOY UH WE’RE GONNA MOVE TO ROCKLAND BECAUSE YOU DON’T LOVE US ENOUGH DOY UH … giving Lightfoot the first, and only, open dunk she’ll ever throw down in her worthless career. If this team can’t beat Lori Lightfoot, exactly what shot do they have against Green Bay?

Love it. Drew rules.

I somehow missed the story about Mahomes being told by the Bears that he was their top QB choice before the draft and how Mahomes assumed on draft night that he was going to Chicago. Between that and Watson never meeting with the Bears (less angry about this now after we learned what a POS he is), Pace colossally fucked that up in a historically awful way.

Sneakily my favorite line:

Ryan Pace and Matt Nagy still have jobs, mostly because all four of their names have the same number of letters.

WOW:

I’ll end with this: my father died from a ruptured brain aneurysm the day the Bears hired Marc Trestman in 2013, and while rationally I know there’s no connection, part of me still thinks that his Bears fan brain somehow knew what was to come and just couldn’t hold on any longer.

To pile on to the draft regret, league sources say that sometime in early March of that year, the Bears told Mahomes that he was their top quarterback in the class, and gave Mahomes the strong presumption they would take him. This further explains why Mahomes counted to 10 on his fingers after passing for a touchdown at Soldier Field last season. “10” for his draft position, a message to the team who passed on their “top quarterback.” The Bears’ interest in Mahomes was real, but the conversation with Mahomes that he was their top QB may have been a smokescreen to throw people off the scent of their actual top quarterback.

Response from a comment on the article:

I think at this point most of us Bears fans like this team just because we need something in our lives to hate.

I was thinking if my kids end up caring about sports I'll encourage them to pick whichever team they want to root for. If Tampa can keep dominating for the next couple years that will be quite an easy decision for them to make.

I just can't allow myself to do that. The neighborhood kids are all now becoming Sox fans and saying the Cubs suck because in their tiny insignificant lives their worldview is whatever is cool now. 2 years ago, all the neighborhood kids had Cubs shirseys on. While ultimately I'll let them root for whoever they want to, I'm going to try my hardest to steer them to my teams before they get old enough to think its cool to like whoever their dad hates.

Let the kids experiment with sports teams until about age 10, but then it's time to stick to a favorite team.

The Wikipedia page for the Bears 2020 season has the following sentence:

From Week 13 to Week 16, the Bears scored at least 30 points each game, a feat that had not been achieved by the franchise since 1965.

I was immediately struck by the futility represented here. First of all--4 games is...not a lot of games. And 30 points is...not a lot of points. (Above average for a game, perhaps, but nothing earth shattering. And yet--55 seasons is a hell of a lot of games.

So I decided to look at when some other teams last had a 4 game stretch of 30+ point games, to decide how embarrassing this fact is.

Starting with the obvious Chiefs with their powerhouse offense,. Well, they did it in 2020. Naturally.

Seattle did it in 2020

If we include playoffs, Tampa Bay had 7 games above 30 points in a row....in 2020 (3 regular season, 4 playoffs)

Arizona had 5 30+ point games in a row...in 2020

Green Bay had 4 30+ games in a row TWICE in 2020

The Titans had a 4 game streak and a 5 game streak....in 2020

After this I was too drunk to continue. Something it took the Bears 55 years to do was done by (at least) 6 teams just last year.

The futility is just staggering.

bad GM's come and go. or sometimes they evolve. hopefully, Pace is in the process of the latter, but at worst I can rest on the former

While the Chicago sports world is clamoring about how horrid the OLine is this year, my concern is with the WR corps not named Allen Robinson or Darnell Mooney. I've now got Rodney Adams as the #3 on our depth chart, because I have no reason to put much faith in Byrd or Goodwin or Newsome for that matter. I get running Wims out of town, but trading Anthony Miller was my least favorite move of this offseason. Hopefully there will be something on the waiver wire, because one injury to a starter, and ugh. Maybe Cohen can just shift to the WR slot permanently, because outside of a gadget play once or twice a game, he's fallen on the depth chart as well. I like the TE room, but am really concerned about the receiver position.

Well at this point, I'm expecting Cohen to be PUP and out the first 6 weeks at least. Haven't heard any update.

I think Byrd and Goodwin are fine as replacements for Miller. While Miller showed flashes he was pretty inconsistent, didn't seem terribly smart, and has continually had shoulder issues.

Not expecting much from Adams, but if Fields is a star we'll eventually get to regularly experience that thrill of no name WR becoming household names and solid contributors.

Even with Cohen still out, the RB room looks deeper too. Really I think all the skill groups got deeper. It's on Kmet and Mooney (and perhaps Montgomery) to elevate their games to improve the high end. I'm very high on Mooney personally. Less so on Kmet and Montgomery, but if one of those 3 had a huge breakout year, the other two would be fine as is, probably.

I think I side more with the former comment than the latter. While I do think the Bears are slightly better off at WR than last year (Mooney a year of experience, Byrd/Goodwin as the #4 is an upgrade over Wims as the #4 last year), I don't think they are improved enough. I like both Goodwin and Byrd, but they both have only produced in 1 NFL season each. Byrd's season was just last year, so that's promising, but that big season was essentially what the Bears had been getting from Miller. Goodwin's productive season was 4 years ago now and it was when he was basically the #1 WR for the Niners due to a bunch of injuries.

So, I don't think the Bears should have much problem matching last year's production: Robinson is Robinson. Mooney should be better. Kmet should give you what Graham did last year. Graham should be able to chip in with 2020 Kmet like numbers as TE2. Byrd and Goodwin should be able to make up for Miller's lost production + whatever Wims, Ginn, etc. gave them. But the issue is the production last year wasn't good enough, and it doesn't project to get much better unless the OL can hold up and Fields plays way more than he sits, and gets that deep ball working.

I would look for the Bears to be active on the waiver wire within the next 2 weeks. If a decent WR becomes available, I think the Bears jump all over him and either try to stash Adams or Dazz on the practice squad. FWIW, I also see them looking hard at CBs and OL that are cut. They could definitely add 1 more body at both spots and cut some dead weight (Hambright, Roberson/Trufant) who are only going to make the roster out of desperation.
