Yankees are acquiring Odor.

This doesn't seem to make sense with DJ, Gleyber, Urshela and others on the roster. But the Rangers are eating almost all of his remaining salary.

Neither Urshela, Andujar, or especially Gleyber are acceptable major leaguers in the middle infield, and the only other name I see on that depth chart is a quad-A guy(Tyler Wade), so adding a second baseman who isn't a danger to himself with the glove feels like a move worth making.

Voigt I think is our for awhile too yet, maybe they want to shift DJ or Andujar to 1B. I don’t think Odor is anything special but he’s the best defender of that bunch and with the short RF porch he could hit 25+ HRs there

The Cubs signed Andrew Romine to a minors contract. The veteran utilityman has played with the Angels, Tigers, Rangers and Mariners over a big league career that began in 2010. Romine was in camp with the Twins in Spring Training but opted out after Minnesota declined to add the 35-year-old to the MLB roster. Romine’s younger brother Austin Romine is a catcher on the Cubs’ major league team, although the backstop is currently on the 10-day injured list.

Next we're gonna hear we've hired their dad to be a coach or something (their dad also played in the bigs but his name doesn't begin with an A).

From MLBTR:

The Reds announced Wednesday that right-hander Cam Bedrosian has rejected an outright assignment to their alternate site after clearing waivers. He’s now a free agent and is free to sign with any team.

He might be an interesting pickup to help out in the bullpen.

Hello Anthony Rizzo's agent we'd like to increase our extension offer by 1 u.s. dollar.

When PTR said he was going to reinvest every last dollar into the team payroll - he meant it.

Cubs signed Dee Strange-Gordon (you probably remember him better as Dee Gordon) to a minor-league deal. Ominous indicator of Nico's injury status.

Don’t mind the move. Ortega hit well in spring and has done the contact thing as a major leaguer (think he also made a swing adjustment or something iirc, his power numbers jumped in 2019). Also this means KB back to infield more and only 1 of Bote/Sogard playing every day over Nico while he’s out, also (optimistically) could mean maybe Nico’s injury isn’t as severe as it looked since they didn’t go with Alcantara.

The Cubs have placed infielder/outfielder Nico Hoerner on the 10-day injured list, designated right-hander Shelby Miller for assignment and selected the contract of outfielder Rafael Ortega, Gordon Wittenmyer of NBC Sports Chicago was among those to report.

And we signed Dee Strange-Gordon to a minor league deal. Could see him getting a call up soon depending on Hoerner's injury.

If they have room to add I’d really like to see us do it soon and jump the market/division. Even if they’re just smaller adds. That gives them enough time they could even re-flip anyone acquired if they fall out of it. But there’s a real chance to win this horsefeathers division. I like Asdrubal or Eduardo Escobar as smaller infield adds, especially if Nico is gonna be down for a long time and they won’t cost much. Probably could use another pitcher too, get Jon Gray you cowards.

The last time strong play inspired the FO to go out and improve the team in season they signed Kimbrel who sucked and the Cubs missed the playoffs for the only time in the last 6 seasons. (Of course I want them to improve the team, my brain just connected those 2 things when I read the quote from Jed)

Anyways, that's great news. We could really use an ace quality starting pitcher and a backup catcher. Any idea where we can find that?

Did strong play inspire that move? I had always been under the impression that the bullpen being a catastrophic pile of suck led to that move.

We also traded for Castellanos 7 weeks later with Theo basically talking Ricketts into forking over a couple million to pay for him.

If money is truly there, I'd like to make some moves that get some shopping done for this winter early, and don't cost much in terms of prospects.

Like if the Dodgers are happy with their depth, I bet AJ Pollock or David Price could be had for little/nothing. If Nick Castellanos is no longer hitting at a Bonds-ian level, him too. Wil Myers, Andrew Mccutchen, and Kevin Kiermaier have all gotten off to slow starts, but if they get back to their normal clips they'd all fit the mold of what I'm looking for.

There were quotes after they signed Kimbrel that basically said that the Cubs strong play of late gave them the confidence to go out and make the move. At the time of his signing the Cubs were in the middle of an 11-2 stretch. Of course Zobrist's personal issues clearing payroll space played a big part as well.
