again, if len really wants to just nerd out and wanted to do radio without having to uproot his family and this was just a timing thing, so be it. if that's what he wants, he should do whatever makes him happy. i tend to, like others, suspect that all the nonsense going on with the Cubs had at least something to do with nudging him that way, but maybe it really is just the opportunity presenting himself. whatever.

My hottest in the moment take is that if Len wanted to do radio so badly then they should've put Pat(who has very much lost his fastball) out to pasture.

i don't disagree, but they'd never do that (and len would probably want nothing to do with forcing him out)

aren't you my anti-vin scully buddy too?

Horrible take. And I have to believe that Pat is more popular than Len among Cubs fans too. I always liked Len, but Pat is the voice of the Cubs to me.

That would significantly soften the blow if they are legitimately going to search for and hire a worthy replacement. I'll believe it when I see it though.

I know we should expect the worst when it comes to this offseason, but this pretty clearly means Myers isn't getting the job. He's currently already under contract, so if the network is saying they're looking for an outside hire he's not in the running.

Myers is 61, so if they're looking for a potential long-term solution, he would make no sense at all.

Len seems like a guy that would go to the grave denying it was anything but this even if there was something else, but here's this -

More popular among a certain subset of Cubs fans, sure.

If by "subset", you mean "majority", sure. I find it hard to believe that they'd let a more popular broadcaster who wanted to do radio leave rather than just fire the less popular radio guy and replace him with Len.

you think len would have watched them fire pat and then taken his job?

He was okay with doing it to Andy Masur, so there's clearly a line that can be crossed even if he may not have done it for Pat.

To be honest, I have barely watched the cubs the last couple years because the on-field stuff is just such an unenjoyable experience. Even though Len and JD were so great together I really found myself absentmindedly listening to the radio broadcast most times. (call me crazy but i really like pat and ron)

I didn't plan on watching much this upcoming season anyway but this really sealed it. I think the biggest cause of sadness for me is just that len is so synonymous with all the fun cubs times of everything post-2003.

this is a ridiculous comparison. i don't care for pat hughes but his status is on a completely different level.

this is a ridiculous comparison, andy masur is a nobody who started doing radio for the sox in 2018. i don't care for pat hughes but his status is on a completely different level.

The point I'm making is that especially at the MLB level, broadcast jobs are in short supply and in order to get your dream gig you'll likely need to be cutthroat to some degree. I don't know that Len would have taken the Cubs radio job this year under these circumstances, but I find the 'Pat is a legend, he would NEVER' to be short of 100% convincing.

i'm pretty sure tt was making a joke at andy masur's expense (and a little bit of a semi-troll playing off of his feelings on pat)

well nevermind i was wrong LOL

consider me firmly 100% in the camp that len would never want anything to do with a plan that could even conceivably be construed as him forcing out pat hughes.

Well apparently Pat is only liked by a small subset of Cubs fan, so his status can't be too large.

I was giving you the benefit of the doubt that you were joking.

My bad.
