Okay...

I'm not offended by what he wrote. I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt and not taking that sentence to mean he is superior for having an actual office on a reservation. What is the problem with that? I need to go back and read the whole transcript again, but I wouldn't take offense to his saying that line.

My wife was literally born on a reservation. My child is a quarter Choctaw Indian. I have a legal office on an actual reservation. I have gone to Washington DC to lobby for increased federal funding for them on multiple occasions as a legal liaison for them. Because of my ancestry I'm technically a member of the Tribe myself although I'd never claim to be one (see: Elizabeth Warren). So perhaps I have some insight that goes beyond whatever a typical "white southerner" has on this particular issue...

I have no problem with what he wrote.

Remove yourself from the argument for a moment. (Something I'm admittedly bad at.) You called a guy married to a Choctaw "Dances with Wolves." Regardless of if your side of the argument is right or wrong, that's pretty gd fucked.

If he hadn’t bragged about how all the good things he’d done for native Americans, including even designing himself to have an office on their reservation, I wouldn’t have. However it’s pretty accurate so I stand by.

Thank you. The entire point of all of that was to indicate that this isn't just some flippant "ummm but i have a black friend" type of situation. These are people who are my literal family. I live with them and work with them. All I've ever said this whole time is that this gives me the ability as an outsider to make an educated opinion on where many of them likely stand on this issue.

you need to go somewhere quiet and reflect on this inner racism you have. Seriously, the places your mind went tonight could only come from a bigot. dreamcatchers? If we were talking about me being married to a black woman would you have asked me about watermelon?

No, I mentioned the dream catcher because they’re a common item appropriated by white people who think they understand something they actually do not.

It’s also something that many actual Native Americans have in their homes and it is a popular symbol of the First Nations. Stop defending your soft bigotry.

Yes I obviously know what it is, which is why it apparently got under your skin to the degree it did

As someone who covered several dozen high school basketball and volleyball games on reservations before Da Bum took my job, I guess I have a responsibility to wade in.

Changing the names and characterizations is as much about forcing white people to acknowledge the truth of their cultural legacy as it is whether or not the victims feel personally offended. We live in the aftermath of a multi-century campaign of genocide and theft that was colonialism, full of gaping wounds that need to be addressed. Addressing long-standing instances of cultural appropriation are important symbolic victories (well, as important as symbolic victories can ever be, where no real wealth or power changes hands) in the campaign to get the beneficiaries of colonialism to overcome decades of propaganda and realize that the world requires more from them than merely not perpetrating new harm but to actively roll back existing harm. It is not enough to merely Not Be Racist Anymore, things have to actively be changed.

Holy horsefeathers Mahomes is signing a 10 year deal. I didn’t even know that was allowed in the NFL.

That seems likely dumb on his part, but we'll see.

The rumors are it’s going to approach $500 mil and they’ll tie it to him getting a % of the cap (I’ve seen 16-18%) so he gets the team/league revenue benefit, why is it dumb to not lock that in? The downside is appreciably higher, imo, going short term and risking injury or whatever and costing yourself $100+ mil than it is to try and pick up a little more money every 3-4 years to maybe make a couple $10 mil more a year over 10 years.

Mahomes got half a billi! Damn.

So, if you're scoring at home, the Bears saved almost 500 million by drafting Trubisky!

So far I'm seeing $63ish garaunteed, a little less than $150 in injury insurance or something, and the Chiefs can cut lose anytime after the first two years (really the 4th year) but obviously won't barring catastrophe...He can earn somewhere between $477-503 throughout the life...

I wasn't aware of the ability to lock in a specific % of the cap. If that exists, that obviously helps with any downside.

Per a few posts after this, guarantees matter a ton as well. If not a lot is guaranteed, he's potentially in a position where they just have endless team options (in effect).

Been pretty busy the past few days, but I'll be interested to dig into details. Still, long term contracts are bad if not accompanied with significant guarantees.

Eh, for an NFL QB of his level/age/accomplishment he’s going to have to suffer some significant injury or career altering incident for them to ever cut him. Other NFL positions, sure, but as long as he’s a top 12 or so QB under the deal he isn’t getting cut.

If he's not cut one of those scenarios is where he is criminally underpaid.

Or he becomes too expensive and is cut because the cap flattens and he never sees huge portions of the unguaranteed money.

The structure and total guarantees matter A LOT.

I’m just not going to fault a guy or call it a dumb move when the most likely outcome of a decision is ~$500 million and the least likely outcomes are ~$125 mil if he horsefeathering sucks/his leg falls off or ~$700 mil if he plays it perfectly right.
