This is completely speculative because obviously a million things would have changed if teams were playing for 7 playoff spots a conference vs. 6, but just for fun, how much different does the lovie era look with the new playoff format.

As it stands, they made the playoffs 3 times in 9 seasons, twice getting a 2 seed, once getting a 1 seed.

If we kept the standings the same (meaning no butterfly effect), the Bears make the playoffs 3 additional times during Lovie's tenure, including the final 3 years before he was left go. Those years are 2008, 2011 and 2012. 2012 they definitely were a legit playoff team as they finished 6th in DVOA and could have made a playoff run. 2011 is a little harder to say because Jay Cutler missed the final 6 games of the season at a point where the Bears were rolling at 7-3 (they finished 1-5 without him). IIRC, Jay potentially could have played week 17 if the Bears were still in the playoff hunt, so we have reason to believe he would have been back for the playoffs. In 2008 I remember them being pretty mediocre led by Kyle Orton. They had a rather easy schedule and blew a game against a crappy Texans team in week 17 to miss the playoffs. Not sure they deserved to be there.

Also changing...the 2010 team was fairly average by DVOA (15th). They earned a bye with a pretty low record for a bye team at 11-5. They then had the fortune of playing possibly the worst playoff team in a long time (the 7-9 Seahawks) at home to advance to the NFC championship game where they lost to GB. I believe in the new playoff format the 7 seed would have been the 10-6 Giants which could have easily been a loss.

Long rambling post about hypotheticals from a decade ago. I'm stuck in a quarantine and work is slow today, I have to do something.

And regarding the playoff format, I hate the idea of a 7th team added, but I really like the idea of getting rid of one of the byes. It just seems so much of an advantage, though I guess guaranteeing that 1 conference championship team will be playing their 3rd playoff game in a row is a gigantic advantage for the 1 seed.

Pace really needs to trade back with 1 or even both 2nd rounders. Theres not much money left to plug up all the needed depth and certainly not enough picks to compensate for that either. Knowing him he will take them both (and a future pick) to trade into the end of the 1st.

Eh, sure if you dont like the prospect value, trade down. But trade downs from the second aren't necessarily going to give you tons of immediate depth capital.

For reference, past Pace trade downs:

2016: traded down from 41 to 49 for pick 117 and a future 4th

2016: traded down from 49 to 56 for pick 126

2017: traded down from 36 to 45 for pick 119, 197, and a future 5th (they also added pick 221)

Of the extra picks they got in the same year (117, 124, 119), they became Kwit (after a small trade up), Deon Bush, and Cohen. All decent picks actually, but only Cohen had a big immediate impact. Then you're maybe getting future picks which are nice but not filling depth needs now. Of course, there's always a slight chance that 4th rounder is an EJax and immediately contributes, but those aren't great odds either. If you look at actual contributions of day 3 picks, it's much more long term building blocks rather than day 1 contributors (outside of ST play).

So even though they have 3 pretty big needs (RG, S, CB), if there was just 1 at those positions I liked at 43 and 50, I'd be glad to just fill only 1 or 2 of those spots.. He'll need to try and fill some immediate depth at those spots with cheaper FA.

Holy horsefeathers tell me this was photoshopped rofl.

It wasn’t but a still frame makes it look a lot worse. Still pretty bad though

yes it was

I mean definitely the fact that I wasn't quite sure is what makes that so great as a joke.

It must be a photoshop....I don't see his check-down receiver 2 yards behind the line of scrimmage

You know, you kind of forget how absurdly bad he was at times until something like this appears and reminds you. I, for one, welcome our insect overlords, or Foles.

That play doesn't stand alone. it happened over and over again. He doesn't see the entire field. He can't anticipate an open receiver. He can't see an open receiver. He can't hit an open receiver. It's why defenses challenge him to throw deep and stuff the line. I'm going to guess that he makes a lot of these plays in practice, but in game situations against a challenging defense, he has no confidence to make these plays. You can see it in his happy feet, his locked in target 5 yards away. it's affected the line play, the running game and the entire offense. I'm so ready to see this team move on. I bought my wife a Trubisky jersey, so I there was a time I was excited about him. I'll hold off on buying a Foles jersey, but I am happy with this trade.

Steelers fans are rushing to the replies to inform Bears fans how bad he is

Pace loves 1st rd busts tho

It's a prove it deal, and they need cheap help somewhere. If he can't make plays in training camp, he won't make the opening day roster.

Looks like it's a 6M signing bonus for Graham, meaning the 9M guaranteed is 6M this year against the cap, and 3M next year if we cut him... Still very much not a fan of the move

I don't remember which game, but I watched the outside receiver flash across the middle, wide open, and I jumped up yelling "he's open!" Trubisky danced around and checked down for a gain of 4-5 yards. The color guy recaps the play as Trubisky doing a good job of taking what's available and getting a gain on the play, he actually said, "Trubisky makes his read, doesn't see anything, checks it down to keep the chains moving," which I guess was accurate, but he DIDN'T see the wide open receiver and missed a huge gain. I wonder how pissed Nagy had to be due to this, and can only think that this is why he ended up sitting him down at the end of the season. Hard to buy that hip injury...
