I wouldn't hate Kapler. He seems like a guy that will improve a lot in his second go around. Hell, I didn't hear too much negativity this past season beyond just general dissatisfaction with the Phillies.

Did I miss a meme where everyone they interview that isn’t NSBB approved is some sort of undercover research on other franchises?

There were articles specifically saying (Theo may have directly said it too) they wanted to interview guys from smart teams with the intent being to at the least pick their brains on how things are done in other orgs even if they weren’t serious candidates. Kapler doesn’t seem like a serious candidate so I think it’s reasonable for connecting given his ties to LA.

I mean, Kapler played 2 separate stints with the Red Sox and was beloved enough that Gammons cried on camera because Nick Swisher struck him out, but yeah they’re going to interview him to find out the passwords to the Phillies scouting program.

For one if this is more of a fact finding interview I think it’s more about his time with the Dodgers with player development stuff than any Phillies stuff. Secondly, maybe they want to take his temperature on a non-head coaching role because of his work and how he was thought of with the Dodgers and finally maybe it is a serious interview to consider him but also a bit of a favor (if he’s beloved so much) to bring him in so his name stays out there as a candidate for the other 7 teams or whatever it is looking for managers “if Theo thinks he can be a manager why don’t we give him a look.”

according to MLB Trade Rumors Cubs (and Mets and Pirates) requested an interview with Sam Fuld for the manager position, he turned everybody down.

I can’t remember anyone turning down a manager interview request from the Cubs before we won. Just another team now. We should have kept Torres and not won the championship.

It sounds like he either doesn’t want to manage right now or has the Phillies job (where he’s been working for a few years now).

We also got the first interview, while his team is still playing and other teams have requested to interview him, with probably the most sought after/qualified candidate in Espada. That seems like a pretty big deal.

I wonder if the Mets have asked Espada yet for an interview? If he picked the Cubs for today when he was headed to New York already it's probably a good sign that he wants this job.

Or that he teed up the Mets interview on the off day following game 4

There seems to be some support in here for Kapler, but to me that would be a very disappointing hire.

Not sure what you mean by that statement? You think there is support for Kapler here on this forum? I doubt that...

I think he got an interview, in part, because he was a member of the Dodgers' FO before being hired by the Phillies. The Cubs desperately want to know the inner-workings and player development secrets of the Dodgers, Astros and Yankees. Partially why we're interested in Joe Espada too.

Kapler is smart, but he's also stubborn and not great at building a strong team culture. I don't care for Kapler and think he's more suited for an instructor/coach role.

After an interview Monday with Espada that sources say impressed Cubs executives, insiders suggest it’s a two-man race for the Cubs job, with in-house candidate Ross holding the edge.

I haven't paid enough attention and I suppose I don't really care all that much, but Ross seems to me like not a very good choice. On the other hand, what do I know?

I wonder if David Ross is the choice, why they haven’t announced it yet. Yesterday would have been the perfect day to do it with the playoff game postponed. It wouldn’t have overshadowed a game.

I suppose it could just be a contract negotiation thing. But the longer this drags out, the more it looks like Espada is the choice.

It definitely seems like at the least Espada asked for a little time to think/wait for Houston to be done and/or they’re still trying to woo him. Seems like Ross is theirs if they want him so makes sense to wait out Espada’s decision, Ross can be hired tomorrow or in 3 weeks or whatever when the WS is done.

Has Ross interviewed with any other team? If not - shouldn’t that be a concern?

Not really. One, it's pretty clear he wants the Cubs job, so it may be that there's no point in interviewing him (at least until the Cubs job is filled by someone else). Two, 90% of a manager's job nowadays is the soft skills. It's entirely possible that given his relationship to our guys he would legit be valuable for us, but just another guy for any other team.
