I'm not very impressed with Roberts the tactician(although admittedly that's in the playoffs which are a slightly different animal), but if I'm going to live up to my words about caring the most about player development, I can't ignore that the Dodgers have been the absolute gold standard at it. Yes they've had plenty of top prospects, but they've all hit, and they also have been able to resurrect careers too(Muncy, Turner, Hill, Morrow, etc)

To clarify, we never meant to impute any type of competence to Dave Roberts' managerial abilities. TT Inc apologizes for the error and the person responsible has been sacked.

Did Roberts just Grady Little himself out of a job?

Ross is interviewing today, fwiw

Going to be interesting to see the teamwide mutiny if Ross gets hired. No one wants to have that horsefeathers anywhere near the team on a regular basis again.

I feel like I'm missing something here.

That thread and the Bums anthology should be required reading before anyone posts on here

Happy for Dave Martinez.

Me too. Even though he only played with the Cubs for a few years, he was one of my favorite players as a kid. I thought, as most did, that he was toast earlier this season. I'm really glad the Nationals stuck with him and turned things around. It also provides a future counter-argument to the "fire the manager to give the team a spark" school of thought.

"Fire the manager to give the team a spark" is more of a thing you do with guy who has been around a while and isn't getting the same production as before. It wouldn't have been the issue with a guy after one year. That's more of a "we've made a huge mistake" move.

I’m just going to go on the record and say that I think David Ross is a recipe for disaster. I’m very opposed.

If managers had a significant impact I would agree but it would likely be a marginal at best impact between him and someone better.

With that said, he's definitely not choice #1.

That's a weirdly strong stance.

Why?

I have to say, as ridiculous as the theory is, I really would love to see a situation where Lester is openly defying Ross, refusing to come out of games, and picking and choosing his starting dates. Then Bryant can go all Roger Dorn pointing out that his contract states he doesn't need to play the outfield and never has to field bunts. Rizzo shows up drunk every day and is peer pressuring Ross into drinking with him in the clubhouse and Ross goes on to have a legendary press conference where he spills the beans about being in over his head and can't stand the front office and thinks half the team sucks.

Not that it's necessarily causal, but most of the best teams in baseball have a younger front office puppet with limited experience (or, initially, none) managing them. I'm not sure I see what can be so disastrous.
