STRICTLY TALKING BASEBALL...who ended up having the worse fall from nigh-can't miss-prospect grace between Russell or Schwarber?

I would go with Russell. His ceiling was higher.

Was his ceiling all that much higher if Schwarber could’ve stayed at catcher?

Poor Darvish, dude can’t buy a win.

Got some runs in with the bases load, still felt like we should’ve piled on more, especially runners freezing on balls that were clearly down.

Nice to open the break getting a 2 out hit to get the winning run in!!

I guess I was assuming he wouldn’t have stayed at catcher but if he could have then that definitely changes things.

Yeah I don’t think it was likely he stuck there either. But it seemed to be the plan to start using him more in 2017 after Ross was gonna be gone and rotate him and Willy there and in LF along with Montero. Who knows maybe he would’ve been able to develop there if he doesn’t blow out the knee in 2016. Even as a guy who can catch 30-45 games a year right now as he is, that still would add a lot of value if he’s remotely decent back there.

Russell was the number one minor league prospect at one point or damn close. I thought he was going to be great. But, he isn’t.

I think he made it to 4th or 5th but as a SS his ceiling was a HOF comp.

Pre-2015 BP ranked him 2nd and BA 3rd

Schwarber was never higher than 19th but he rose through the minors so quickly he almost certainly would have been in the top 10 if he was still a prospect in 2016, possibly top 5

It’s (highly) debatable that it would have worked out without the injury, but schwarber still having the ability to play catcher once or twice a week would have helped his value quite a bit. Schwarber has pretty much plateaued, which I don’t think anyone expected given how quickly he moved through the minors. Russell has gotten actively worse.

Yeah, Russell has gotten worse and his approach at the plate is terrible (I mean it's been bad for multiple seasons now). Schwarber was suppose to be a middle of the order bat and I'm not sure how his defense would rate at C (probably not great) if he stayed there. I really feel like the devastating knee injury in 2016 changed his trajectory and development.

I think Russell was perceived as having the higher overall ceiling with a greater chance to make more All-Star games and have a longer, more productive career.

Was Schwarber ever declared the next Barry Larkin? Yeah, didn't think so bub.

Hope you know I'm just kidding.

schwarber tore up the minors but he was never at russell's status overall

edit: i am very late

I didn’t think Schwarber could stick at catcher so it’s a moot comparison. Russell could be a top 5 defensive SS and Barry Larkin at the plate, instead, he’s gotten worse every year, somehow

Russell is a 0.7 fWAR guy in 47 games compared to Schwarber being a 0.3 fWAR in 86 games. That's pretty bad. Russell provides value with the glove still, Schwarber provides no value.
