in assisting Atlantic League umpires call balls and strikes

All good, except do not change the distance from the rubber to the plate.

For those concerned about the rising strikeout rate, that's likely the best way to fix it.

What’s the intent around making the bases bigger? That’s a new one to me.

For 1B bigger so the runner has more space to step to avoid a collision? 2B with the new slide rule it helps protect the fielder a bit to give him more base to play with to hold it? 3B, no idea other than conformity.

But in mid-season? It'll be an adjustment for batters too. Their timing will be off.

They would never do that in real baseball obviously. I'd guess this is purely to improve the ability to make 1:1 comparisons with the collected data

I think its interesting that they are going to experiment with banning the shift

I wonder how much shifting even goes on in independent league and MILB without (i'm assuming) the amount of advanced scouting that there is in MLB.

I remember reading an article last year about shifting and teams that do it a lot, specifically, have their minor leaguers do it blindly and it’s not based on scouting reports just to get use to the positioning. Like vs a LHB 2B shifts to short RF, SS to 2B and 3B to SS regardless if the scouting report would say to do so. Iirc

I've been thinking about this for awhile, but never really cared to write about it. I care way more about getting an automated strike zone.

Yeah, the best thing (from my viewpoint) is that 1B will be a larger object so there's more space for the runner and first baseman to avoid a collison. It's scary sometimes when an errant throw might lead to a collision.

I was also thinking a larger 2B might make stealing a little more viable if the runner has more surface area to keep contact with the bag/avoid the tag. You know this would definitely help Baez.

Same thing with 3B -- bigger base might make stealing a little easier.

Quick dirty math: 15 x 15 = 225 sq in^2, 18 x 18 = 324 sq in^2. So an increase of 99 inches. Not insignificant. It should be a good thing I think.

Lol. I never said the math was hard...

I just wanted to show it because people might not realize how much total surface area you'd be adding if they made this change. Again, I think it's a good thing.

Yeah, said differently, the surface area of the base would increase by over 40%. That would take some getting used to.

If we're really going to move to no mound visits, why not just modernize the game, and allow managers/coaches to communicate with players via an earpiece? You can speed things up, and do away with sign stealing. Obviously, you'd need strong encryption, and possibly some sort of league monitoring/review process to ensure everything is on the up and up, but let's move into the modern era.
