Both playoff games open with double digit point spreads. Yawn

The semifinals have been mostly ass in the playoff era (last year's Rose Bowl a huge exception). I'd take the points in both these games, though. OU's defense is bad, but Bama just gave up 28 points in 3 quarters to Georgia before the Bulldogs collapsed, so the Sooners should be able to score enough to at least cover.

that's a strange hire for anyone looking to win a lot of football games

He has a great reputation as an offensive coach (he's only going to be their OC). It's a pretty decent gamble for SC. If it doesn't work everyone's fired anyway.

ah, I read that as he was going there as HC

Man, I dunno. Oklahoma has a terrific offense, but Bama can really strangle teams at times. Ole Miss, bad as they were, were a Top 10 offense and only scored one touchdown (on the first play of the game) and LSU and Mississippi State were shutout.

Then you factor in the fact that Oklahoma has one of the worst defenses in the entire country....that’s not a receipe for success.

I doubt they cover if Tua is healthy.

Offensive/defensive rankings are useful to a point, but Michigan had the #1 defense in the country and got 62 points dumped on them by OSU, so...

Yeah, it seems like an obvious OC hire

Kliff is a great OC/playcaller. Then again, the season I most paid attention to he had the Heisman Trophy winner as his QB so maybe that made him look better than he really is.

The games might be close for a while and not blowouts like recent years in the semis but I think Clemson and Bama both end up winning by double digits and likely covering in the end.

If Tua can't go I still believe there's real good chance Bama scores on nearly every possession.

Yeah if Hurts has to play I don’t think that affects them much vs Oklahoma’s defense. It would vs Clemson in the championship though.

people here are acting like it's a sure W if Hurts starts, which is incredibly bold given that OU hasn't stopped a mobile quarterback in a decade.

I can squint and see a path for OU - georgia's defense was pretty good last year and OU's offense went wild against them (and OU's offense this year is like half a yard per play better than last year's. Seriously, they average almost 9 yards per play, it's insane.)

But as bad as the defense is there's no room for confidence against (checks notes) the best team in college football history

Yep. I've never seen a more dominant team in my life. They are exceptional on both sides of the ball.

Oddly, the 2016 Bama team that didn't quite finish the job in the title game is the highest-rated in the short history (since 2005) of Bill Connelly's S&P+ metric, by a pretty wide margin too - the difference between Bama '16 and second-place OU '08 is slightly bigger than the difference between OU '08 and 10th place, which is this year's Clemson.

This Bama team is fourth, tied with '05 USC (Florida '08 was third).

Also oddly, every playoff team this year has a better S&P+ rating so far than any playoff team last year.

lol, OMC just Derwood'd himself.

How? I stated a fact. Then showed the stats to back it up. Ole Miss were Top 10 in total offense (9th). They were also Bottom 10 in total defense (121st of 130), thus why they were only a 5-7 team.

Because North Texas played an SEC schedule? Not sure why they are relevant. If someone said Bama was a Top 10 offense, would you have also brought up North Texas? I don’t get it.

You could’ve just said “oh, I’ll be damned. Didn’t realize their offense was good”, instead you went all Mojo.

I’m not sure how the 860 yards Ole Miss tacked up against Louisiana-Monroe is really relevant either. Counting total yards and ranking teams accordingly is beyond archaic. You’re already backing off with the SEC schedule caveat. Of course if you limited their offense to the ranked SEc teams they averaged 255 yards, which is just a shade under what The Citadel put up against Bama

I'm glad I got you to take a deep dive into Ole Miss' horrific season. You can spin it how you want, but my statement wasn't a false one.

It's just a subpar way to say that Ole Miss had a good offense, which they did this year. S+P would have sufficed -- they're 12th.

Anyway, this thread is for bowl games. Why are we still talking about Ole Miss? :D

Hugh Freeze just signed a 5 year deal with Liberty to be their HC. Match made in heaven: Southern Baptist hypocrite gets to now coach at a school founded and run by Southern Baptist hypocrites.
