Where’s Duke to make us all drop the razor blades?

even if the stuff he said wasn’t just blindly grasping at threads of optimism, no underlying team quality would make you comfortable with a half game lead over the brewers and the teams’ remaining schedules.

drugs, tree. the answer is drugs.

Maybe this needs to happen.

Maybe the bizarre wrongness of a truly dominant Cubs team unsettled something in the fabric of reality, and the ripple of chaos energy is what tipped things in favor of Trump winning.

Maybe if the Cubs go back to their hilariously inept ways starting off with an epic collapse, then things can start healing.

There’s nothing to make that happen anymore, this team is done for the regular season. Unlike the 58 times Sofa mentioned there’s no data points, math/probability with the lead we have with games left, splits, heat maps, etc to grab on to for hope. They’re just done. Maybe they somehow miraculously win the WC game and get hot, but division and automatic DS dreams are dead.

Or they just can’t hit offspeed pitches. Which is what was happening in 2016 and then they tore off a couple games with a ton of runs. It all comes down to tonight. We also need Yelich to be intentionally walked a lot.

Maybe it's a matter of the greater good.

I know they’ve been playing well and big reason for losing the division is just the VBs getting super hot but I didn’t know how well they were playing. They’re 18-7 since end of August (.700+ win% and 115+ win pace) and we’re 13-13, which isn’t that bad (we obviously look like horsefeathers but record wise that’s okay). I probably would’ve taken .500 ball from that point because we had a ~5 game lead and the death march, it just really took the VBs going nuclear to catch us. Playing ~.500 on from the lead/point of the season we were at probably wins the division most of the time, just annoying this isn’t one of them. Edited by Cubswin11

I was shocked when you said it was over yesterday and didn't believe it. You just doubled down, so now I do.

Welcome.

Also, I miss those charts from a couple days ago that had what each team needed to do to catch the Cubs. When looking at them, you sort of are comforted when a team needs to go like 6-1 to catch you............until that team goes like 7-0.

I don’t plan on staying this way long, I’ll be back to believing in them come the WC game and next year. Just this team has a funk on them right now and I don’t think we can shake it in time.

Plus we’re fully following the Theo era Sox (if you start our run at 2015) Year 4 was a disappointing season. For the Sox that was missing the playoffs and for us it will be losing in the WC game.

The good news is Year 5 is another World Series!

I know some have had a blast and been totally entertained watching and following the Cubs this season. But for a guy like me who has been bored, tired and just ready for the season to end, I can't even comprehend what it would be like for this team to go on a postseason run and win it all. I'd look back on a championship season and think, 'What a shitty season that was.'

That's weird of me.

STL won 2 recent titles with pretty shitty teams, and I think they're ok with it. I'd get over it, too.

nothing in sports will ever come close to 2016 for me, but this end-of-season disaster followed by running the table in the playoffs and inexplicably winning the world series would probably come as close as possible.

that scenario would mean permanent liver damage for me, I'm sure of it

I do believe we will get to the playoffs, and even then I don't hate our chances of getting hot for a week and making the NLCS again. But I hope that this disappointment of a season when we were supposed to be an offensive juggernaut inspires Theo and co. to go nuts in the offseason.

My plan for saving the Cubs:

From now until Sunday, this will be the lineup/roster

C - Taylor Davis

1B - Victor Caratini

2B - Mike Freeman

SS - David Bote

3B - Tommy LaStella

LF - Kyle Schwarber

CF - Albert Almora

RF - Jason Heyward

Bench consists of just Terrance Gore, Ian Happ and Bobby Wilson

Starters:

Wed - James Norwood

Thurs - Jorge De La Rosa

Friday - Alec Mills

Saturday - Game 1 NLDS starter

Sunday - Game 2 NLDS starter

Pen - Duensing, Chatwood, Zintzler, Rosario, Webster

The following players are banned from entering Wrigley Field unless starting on Sat or Sun or rehabbing an injury until Monday: Jesse Chavez, Steve Cishek, Carl Edwards Jr, Cole Hamels, Kyle Hendricks, Jon Lester, Mike Montgomery, Jose Quintana, Pedro Strop, Justin Wilson, Willson Contreras, Javier Baez, Kris Bryant, Daniel Murphy, Anthony Rizzo, Ben Zobrist.

Chili Davis is fired and a new donging coach is hired to work with the players at an off site facility. The rest of the time those players will be banned from all baseball activity. If for some reason the Zombie Cubs put the real Cubs in a position to win the division on Sunday, they come back and play. Otherwise, the players get 6 days off, unless they tie the Brewers, then 5 days off.

Yes giving up on the division on paper drastically lowers our odds of winning a World Series, but I would argue that a) the chances of beating the Pirates and Cardinals more times than the Brewers beat the Cardinals and Tigers is low and b) If we can get past the Wild Card game, that rest will help our tired team immensely and increase our chances of actually winning in the playoffs. Think outside the box Theo!

I'm....fairly sure that you're joking, but given the amount of work you put into that, on the off chance that you aren't...no.

60% joking. I think the team's overall fatigue is the biggest factor for their poor play of late, but yeah no one would ever do this.

A decent line up card could probably pull them through it but Hippie Ditka has to act smart

Doubtful.

MaddoningTM has tried just about every lineup possibility there is, both good and bad. Multiple players can’t even get “lukewarm” at the same time. And they can’t seem to bunch hits together to score runs (when they actually hit).

I keep waiting for the offense to get back to normal at some point this year, and it really hasn’t happened. Hopefully, this is not the new normal.

Herein lies the problem with not consistently having sane lineups.

I would like to see Albert Almora lead off by getting on base, and then pinch running Gore for him right away and trying to steal a run.

Sort of like how the Rays start games with bullpen guys first. The huge problem with this would obviously be Almora actually getting on base.
