I almost want them to blow the whole thing. This team isn’t fun. And kinda deserves that dubious noteriety.

In a way, I agree.

Even with the small samples of a 5/7 game series, I can't see them doing anything.

Give them rest. Get another dominant reliever and backup C (starter for 40-50 games) and call it an off-season.

Can we just send like 15 guys to DC and rest everyone else back in Chicago
I did see a tweet earlier that Maddon is planning on leaving some guys here...

Maybe it just in case they cant fly back Thursday night or Friday morning [emoji16]

Great, that just means that the MLB will force the 10 guys left here to play the Reds on Friday when the rest of the team can’t take off in hurricane winds in DC.

It's not that great of a performance to pick the team with a lead to hold onto their lead over an inferior team.

Nah, man. You aren't giving yourself enough credit. If they hold onto this, I don't care what teams they hold off, you are going into the Hall of Fame even before you retire.

This isn't a head to head type race where everything is equal. I hate when people use the tired thing as an excuse, but there is a good chance it's real. And it isn't getting better any time soon. Add in injuries, etc., and if you are right about this, it's a lot better call than just picking the more talented team.

No offense to Duke, but what is really so amazing about what he’s predicting? He’s got a 50% chance of being right? They’ll either win the division or they won’t.

What am I missing?

You're missing that one team is winning a ton of games and is streaking in the positive direction, seems healthy, is properly rested and has an easy sked the rest of the way going up against an injured, tired and shitty team.

Geez even UK with his baseball pedigree is saying these things. Not good.

horsefeathers it. I’m still calling a (sorta) unexpected, “this team just knows how to win” playoff run. It’ll be cool and fun and we will come back to these posts and make fun of each other forever

It's already a crapshoot, and then I look around the NL and what the playoff picture might look like, and it's a super crapshoot. I could for sure see them go on a playoff run.

That he’s being one of the only reasonable people in here instead of being a doom boner making wildly pessimistic proclamations about the team now and moving forward.

Yes it sucks they aren’t playing well and we’re all pissed, but they’re still a plenty good team who’s had to overcome horsefeathers before and knows how to figure it out and they still have a 2 game L column lead with like 16 games left. It’s not like we’re 5 games back.

I’m going to trust the track record of most of these guys being good to great players figuring it out, at least enough of them, than buying in to them all of the sudden being awful in arbitrary sample sizes. Get to the next off day with a lead.

Only if we get the Mets or reds

Question: Why does a lot of our seasons since we have been good almost always come down to fatigue, except for the year we won it all and nobody played the last month?

We lost in the 2015 NLCS because we were gassed, lost in the 2017 NLCS because we were gassed and now we might not even win the 2018 division because we are gassed.

Is this actually why almost all teams eventually lose?

We're really following the Theo Red Sox era.

2003/2015: Playoffs but frustrating LCS loss.

2004/2016: World Series title.

2005/2017: Playoffs but wiped out (they were swept in the LDS, we were 4-1 in the LCS).

2006/2018: Disappointing season (they won 86 games and missed the playoffs).

Of course this means we'll win the World Series next year!

The most annoying part of all this is that the Braves have a 7.5 game lead while playing not so great baseball.

Can the Brewers keep this up? Maybe. We actually might need to start being Cardinals fans so they keep the Dodgers out and beat the Brewers.

I was just wondering the same thing. While it may very well be justified, it sure seems like people use that excuse a lot for the Cubs. Does being tired really cause an entire team to not be able to hit? And do other teams attribute all their failures to having to play too many games?

That’s great. But it’s still a 50/50 proposition. Doom boner, pessimism, whatever doesn’t matter. They’ll either win the division as Duke predicted. Or they won’t. It’s not like Duke is doing something special other that sticking with he prediction he’s made all season.

Again, no offense to Duke. He’s a smart baseball guy, and he’s very optimistic. But he’s not actually doing anything more than making a statement that he has a 50% of being right and a 50% chance of being wrong.

I don’t remember the tired thing being a deal in 2015, just ran in to the one time all the Mets pitchers were firing on all cylinders and Murphy going god mode.

Seems more like bad luck with last year and this year with some extremes happening with the running out of gas thing. We had the rain out game and the crazy game 5 in the DS and short travel turnaround time that led to pitchers going on short rest in the CS or being completely unavailable, which any team is going to get gassed with that happening and then this year with this unfortunate situation of consecutive games and a few injuries lessening options for cycling guys in and out. Again any team would get gassed in this spot, I don’t think it’s unique to us. Luckily guys are getting back and it’s expanded rosters so that helps. I just think it’s some bad luck to have the situation pop up.

I’m not sure if I agree about 2015. If we were gassed in 2017, it was blamed on the super short offseason most guys had. This year we’re gassed because we are playing baseball everyday and in the days we aren’t we are sitting in the clubhouse waiting out weather

2015 we lost because Daniel Murphy homered in every game and the Mets starters were on fire.

2017 we lost because we faced a really good team that won their LDS in 3 games while we had to play 5 games plus had a game in Chicago on the 11th, DC on the 12th and LA on the 14th.

As much as this team frustrates me, the BS that went on in DC was inexcusable. And making them play tomorrow just adds to that. I hope MLB enjoys that Brewers/Rockies ratings bonanza.

That assumes all talent levels are equal. You could make a point that '17 Dodgers were on par with '17 Cubs, I don't think you can say the same thing with the '15 Mets and the '15 Cubs but it doesn't factor sample size either.

3 years of NCLS and/or greater takes a toll.

I'm a proponent of a 6 man rotation and/or various breaks/mystery trips to the DL with this team to maintain a rotation as well as more defined rest for the position players, not just some twitter gimmick to guess a lineup. No reason why they can't win 90 games with a 6 man rotation and sitting each position player a minimum of one game per week.

The rainout that allowed Strasburg to pitch made that series go 5 games

Rockies won so that's cool

Put this in context for me. I have lost all sense of anything else going on besides our team.

Keeps the Dodgers out of the West

Yeah the guy who has written four articles declaring Jason Hayward fixed has some special insight into the cubs.

Duke just takes whatever positive thing he can find, gloms onto it and declares that things are fine because ultimately the cubs aren’t a bad team and any idiot can look at the standings and see they’re good overall. He’s horsefeathering bill James wow
