Man this offseason was just ...

it's crazy, out of all the FA signings made by this front office, what percentage of them would they leap at the chance to reverse?

Chatwood - definitely

Darvish - probably just because so much of the perceived value is tied to the first couple seasons

Morrow - eh, maybe. It’s not too unexpected though and he’s excellent when out there

Cishek - sign 5 of him

I want Arrieta instead of this broken Yu.

Arrieta + Cahill instead of Yu + Chatwood savings of 7.5 million this year and plenty more in the future.

At some point the payroll starts to add up.

Sure but more important is the money hasn’t run out.

Boohoo the team’s breaking a sweat to the best record in the NL with these three burdens

Spoken like a man whose money isn't actually being spent.

I hope we get Harper, but man, that has to make them think twice when busting out a $350-$400 contract. They have no choice but for it to go right without starting to seriously hurt, unless they are just going to spend like the Dodgers and then none of it matters.

Harper will be worth the investment. He’s a generational talent and he’s 25. Barring a major injury, he’ll be worth it.

The Cubs channel or whatever it is going to be called will generate more than enough money to pay for him and everyone else when the time comes.

Fingers crossed the new Cubs channel is somehow just a roku ap. I'd be so juiced to buy that.

Don't forget Duensing.

ETA: Can't imagine it's only a probably on Darvish. They'd love a $126 million do-over on that one. Most of us would.

heyward/darvish/chatwood is what, $300 million wasted? What a world.

At least Heyward has provided some value defensively. Heyward's provided 5.3 bWAR and 3.9 fWAR. How amazed would you be if Chatwood actually got to either of those numbers over the life of his contract? If you limit it to 3 years, Darvish probably won't get there either. Assuming he doesn't pitch next year, he'd have to be a 4-5 WAR pitcher in 2020.

Thank god for Hamels. If our 4 remaining starters pitch close to where they did in their last starts the Cubs will be fine in the playoffs.

Two things I keep telling myself:

1. Outside of the Dodgers, none of the other NL contender offenses are very good. And the Cubs are right with the Dodgers in terms of wOBA, wRC, etc.

2. We should only need the starters to go 4 innings, 5 max. Their main task will have to be avoiding a first inning implosion, which they've been prone to do this year. If we can get one starter per series (my money is on Hendricks) to go 6 or 7 per start, our bullpen should be able to handle short starts by the rest of them.

part 2 is exactly why i wish they had tried a little harder at the deadline to add a pen guy rather than horsefeathering kintzler

I’ve been really positive over the whole season, believing the starters will come around, Yu, Bryant and Morrow will be like adding three all stars come Sept 1, etc. Now, I’m less confident. The playoffs are still a crapshoot, but I feel like the Cubs just lost their Ace in the hole. (Sorry for the mixed gambling metaphors)

Kela looked awfully nice this weekend.

He was my guy, though I was worried about the cost.

If the new version of Hamels can perform, we can deal without Darvish. Absolutely need Bryant and Morrow back.

Yeah, I've been mentally preparing for Yu to be out the whole year. If we get Morrow (and Smyley) back I'll feel great about the pen, and Bryant coming back healthy would be huge.

I'm soo glad we landed the rejuvenated Cole. Hopefully Monty can get back soon too.

wish I would have saved my ticket stub from the may 20th game in cincinnati. darvish's last ever cubs start and only win.

Nothing says “value” like 1 win = $21M.

The guy who had missed all season and had earlier setbacks in his recovery just pulled himself from his first rehab start in mid August and you are reporting that he may be done for the season. Wow, real scoop action.

Yeah in case anyone forgot, he was the only that had the 'scoop' that Darvish signed back in like early January when it wasn't until the end of February when he actually signed.

Bro it's Scoop City not scoop action. We take that very seriously. Our high School football team is playing Flavor Town next week and we don't want anyone making us look silly.
