It’s crazy how many racially insensitive things are/we’re out there.

My mom was a Kindergarten teacher and I grew up learning how to sit “Indian style” (they did finally address this and now it’s not called that in schools).

Hell, my boss now still says things like “we had a pow wow” which I know offends one of our co-workers on some level. She’s a light skinned Native American and she asked her how far back she had to go for her Native American roots. She replied, “ummm. Both my parents?”

out of curiosity, what do they call "indian style" these days?

this offseason is so slow the board is almost exclusively gifs/chat of slow cookers, crisscross applesauce, and dog pics (ok, well that one is cool).

these players not signing are trying to kill NSBB! (i refuse to call it NSB)

Yeah, when did NSBB go away and the switch to NSB happen? I miss having NSBB as a domain.

I think Tim sold it (to be clear I don't care - don't ban me, Tim)

Tribe

No, they were massacred by another tribe.

The descendants of the Illini are now in the Peoria Tribe of Indians in Oklahoma.

You are correct - I thought they were all killed. Seems like the Illinois were a large, loose tribe across a big area.

I was recently remembering this incredibly strange song our elementary school music teacher would have us sing in the earlier grades...it went something like, "I am playing Indian, Indian, Indian, I am playing Indian, my face is painted red!" while he banged on a big drum and we were supposed to be doing the "babababa" thing with our hands to our mouths. We obviously thought this was silly and fun as hell, of course. When I remembered this, I'm like, "Man, that was incredibly racist." So I googled the song lyrics to see who wrote this song and there's no record of it on Google. So my music teacher probably made up this insanely racist thing he had a bunch of 6 and 7 year olds doing.

The guy had a lot of racist songs, in hindsight. I was thinking about some of the numbers we had to sing for “cultural” nights and also couldn’t find them online based on lyrics. This, at an incredibly diverse school, with a black music teacher, no less!

Wait, where'd you have him?

I could definitely see that but I don't remember any of them. Did he do the witch's broomstick song with you guys at Halloween where you'd run around the circle with the broom?

and this song lmao

that’s one I’d like to add to the word rant thread. don’t know why that one sticks in my craw

I just walked past a couple of students who were ranting about how “fucked up” it is that MLB “took away” the Indians logo

Liberal Arts college =/= Liberal thinking

Probably more to do with the fact they are young and dumb.

Bernstein and Goff the other day played some clips from a Cleveland radio show. Some old bag said they should take the Indian casinos away from the Indian tribes, why doesn't anyone stick up for her losing money on slots. Some other mouth breather said why do we let women suck unborn babies out of themselves but its not okay to have the Inidans logo?

I was born in 1974 and attended Devonshire and OOJHS in the 80's - moved in '89 after one year at Niles North. I remember playing in Skokie Indians for Little League Baseball and am sure that do did too.

Curtis House was great, and I doubt that he had a racist bone in his body ... albeit, that's my vision of him are admittedly through the eyes of a child. I remember the Indian-themed songs, as well. These memories were better those I had of Steve Garvey in '84 ...

Gotcha. Yeah, I wasn't there until about a decade later.

Eeny, meeny, miny, moe has very nasty racial origins, too. It's since been sanitized.

Well, there are some super racist versions, but it's a lot older than that and its origins were mostly just in nonsense words.

There's a great Alec Guinness movie called Kind Hearts and Coronets where a character just casually drops the racist version of it, and it's crazy. That's obviously hardly the only time that happened in a movie, but I remember doing a double take when I saw it on TCM a few years ago.
