Embarrassing isn't the word I would choose...are you Laura Rickets?

I would use the word "infuriating." The only reason to be embarrassed is if you had some kind of ownership or management stake in the Cubs.

Would Bryant even accept that deal?

215 means way more to the brewers than 250-300 does to the cubs

but it's not really about bryant himself. just the fact that the brewers are willing to go all out while the red sox and cubs are cheaping out on legendary players.

In fairness, the Brewers were in a much better spot to negotiate with and get Yelich to agree to an extension. He was controlled the next 3 years at like $45 mil because he signed an extension early with the Marlins. He wasn’t going to be a FA until age 31/32. He had incentive to cash in now on an extension since free agency was further away, at an older age for him than it was for Bryant. Like Bryant is gonna make about as much the next two years as Yelich would these next 3 and he’d get to FA sooner and younger.

Frustrating nonetheless, but there were different motivations and factors at work here.

He probably gets a little more because he’s owed more in arb than Yelich’s contract before FA but I think this is a better extension comp to work off of for KB than Arenado, Machado, Bryce and Rendon’s contracts are. I think 9/240 if an extension kicked in this year, 8/220 if next year or 7/200 as a FA for KB +/- $10-20 mil on those contracts would be a decent estimate on a KB deal using this Yelich deal as a benchmark.

i'm strictly talking about their willingness to give out a mega contract to their star. i know kb has risks/issues, but i believe the cubs would be looking to trade him even if he didn't have his mini-decline and injury concerns.

I don’t think we have any idea what the Cubs willingness is on an extension. If Bryant was willing to do an extension based on this Yelich deal I think the Cubs would absolutely do it. If he’s asking/expecting Arenado, Bryce and Machado money I get why the Cubs are doing a deal for him in that range.

The market doesn't care what team you play for and this comparison is misguided. How many times have they had a payroll above MLB average over the past several years while the Cubs were top 5? They play in a publicly-funded stadium and also have a rich (albeit not billionaire) owner.

$215m means more to the Brewers because they've cheaped out on everything about their team for years while the Cubs have spent across the board.

This is a weird deal. When's the last time we saw something like this? Longoria, Braun, and Tulo when they all signed their second contracts 6-7 years ago?

Wondering if the slow start for Yelich this year is:

A - Small sample size, and he’ll get better, much, much better

B - Regression in his game, and his career has peaked

C - Without distraction of fans in the stadium, “home cooking” just not the same

This funk he's in is certainly just A, but I think B is a very real thing. Like I don't thinks he's bad now or anything, but unless you're talking about Trout you should generally assume your MVP candidate is going to be more of an All Star going forward. It's just so hard to stay at that top level for more than a season or two.

I do think it's interesting no one is talking about his knee. That was a pretty gruesome injury less than a year ago, it's not unreasonable to think it is contributing.

Yelich was very good before he became a sign stealing cheat which launched him into superstardom but now he's shook without his buddies in the OF and is permanently broken.

I've got a feeling he drops like 10 homers in the upcoming 4 game series at Wrigley.

Yelich is dog horsefeathers at Wrigley and always has been. I doubt it.

Real question, are things like this a coincidence or do batters just not see the ball well in some ballparks but do in other parks? Darryl Strawberry and Pujols come to mind as players who crushed the ball at Wrigley, more so than other parks, even when the Cubs had good pitchers on the mound.

Pujols career OPS at Wrigley - 1.004

Pujols career OPS with the Cardinals (before he lowed all his career numbers by being garbage and still playing a ton due to his contract) - 1.037
