Trestman failed because he was a huge weirdo and because he had the worst DC I've ever seen.

I only learned after the Georgia/Alabama game that Mel Tucker was the DC for Georgia. How does he get any DC job anywhere after what he did to the Bears defense?

i'd imagine almost anyone who has nfl experience is considered a huge get in a college coordinator role, plus college and pro are such different animals in every sport.

Yeah, Chip Kelley looked pretty bad as an NFL HC, but looked brilliant at OU. But, I was much happier thinking that poor ole Mel Tucker was standing in some unemployment line rather than working on the sidelines during the national championship bowl game.

Not sure if this is the time he is talking about, but this video was taken with Urlacher still on the team I believe:

I am as big a Jay fan as they come, but I would never peg him as being involved in a game of dodgeball.

Wait, why not? And why does that have to be prefaced with bring a fan of his?

Wait, why does he have Jay's fan to begin with?

Is that brand of fans sold exclusively at Jewel-Osco?

this is a funny blast from the past from the bears' first game under jauron w/crowton as OC

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/sports/nfl/longterm/1999/week1/articles/kansascitychicago.htm

CHICAGO – Forget those boring, predictable old Chicago Bears who ran the ball all day and always managed to find a way to lose.

New coach Dick Jauron has the Bears looking like they should be in the Western Athletic Conference instead of the black-and-blue division. And instead of folding when challenged, Chicago found a way to win.

Shane Matthews threw for 245 yards and two touchdowns in his first NFL start, Curtis Enis somersaulted into the end zone and the defense thwarted two Kansas City scoring chances in the last 9:35 Sunday as the Bears held on to beat the Chiefs 20-17.

Jauron won the matchup of the rookie coaches. Gunther Cunningham will have to wait at least another week to get his first victory.

ver since Jauron hired former Louisiana Tech coach Gary Crowton as his offensive coordinator, the talk was all about what kind of wacky, high-octane offense the Bears were going to run. Especially since Matthews, who'd been cut four times by the Bears alone, was starting over rookie Cade McNown.

But Crowton's offense and Matthews' arm worked fine. Pretty entertaining, too. They lined up five wideouts, ran reverses galore, used the shotgun and threw to Enis almost as often as Curtis Conway. There were dumpoffs and short slants. There were end-arounds and screens. Chicago had 229 yards of total offense in the first half – almost as much as they had in some games last year.

Any doubts these Bears were going to be different were erased on their first series. On second-and-10 from the 10-yard line, Matthews hit Enis on a short dump-off and Enis hustled up the middle. Just before he reached the goal line, he jumped up and did a somersault over the goal line for the touchdown.

this thing needs to end in another superbowl so we can end the 85 bears crap just like the goat and 69/84 angst crap.

So the head coach has 8 years NFL coaching experience, the OC has none, the OL has 5, all with Bears, several years removed. Each guy has some legit qualities to be excited about, but I'm concerned about the ability to run an NFL team here.

McVay was younger but had more NFL coordinating experience. His OC and OL coaches were also experienced NFL coaches. And he had a former head coach in Phillips running the defense.

The Eagles and Pederson had even more NFL experience, including their own former head coach as defensive coordinator.

I'd really like to see some more NFL experienced coaches brought in here.

Yeah, I really wanted a very experienced OC or DC with a young head coach. Hopefully, Fangio decides to come back, though it's not looking like it right now. Bettcher is a pretty good alternative at DC, but doesn't have a ton of experience. I'd definitely look to bring in someone in a consulting role if the coaching staff is a bunch of 40 year olds.

I'm starting to come around a bit on the idea of taking Ridley, especially with the type of offense we'll be running. Not that I'm even close to sold on it, but I'm a little more open to it, especially with what seems to be happening with the FA options. If we trade down (not sure what our options are there) and he's available, I'd be more than good with that.

Hell, I'm not counting on him for anything at all, but since he's going to be around anyway, I'm not even counting out the idea that Kevin White might be able to be a factor in this offense if his speed is still there.

I like Ridley, especially if we might be able to trade down to get him (I think I see him in the mid-teens in mock drafts). Draft Ridley, sign Landry and one other (not top of the line) receiver. You can entertain having Cohen spend more time in the slot (not full time but in a spread type of offense he could thrive). Then you can entertain bringing back Meredith (RFA) and having the last season of Kevin White, but not have to rely on those guys in order to have a successful WR unit.

Both Walter football mocks have the bears taking Iowa cornerback Jackson, and I don't hate the idea. I've read that WR is deep, and if they can trade back a little and get back into the third, I may be more interested in a blue chip defensive player and then solving offense with quantity. I feel this offense is going to be about spreading it around to many guys rather than finding and relying on one stud WR.

Yeah, I like the idea of defense or OL in the first round.
