Time to call up the Giants and figure out a Heyward trade

I just don't see a match there. despite those rumors uh ... a month ago? If you are the Giants, you aren't going to move Melancon/Samardzija (or Cueto) in a Heyward deal. You are hoping Cueto/Samardzija, with a returning Bumgarner, anchors a deep rotation and that Melancon's peripherals portend a guy that will bounce back and anchor that pen. Only way you take Heyward is if someone eats money, or the Cubs package something else to make you want to eat that money, and I'm not sure the Cubs necessarily do either.

Perhaps I'm wrong about the GIants, but that seems like their offseason plan - a couple small moves to upgrade the offense and hope for the best on the arm side of things with their veterans, while biding time for their prospects. This leaves aside whether or not Heyward would go there to begin with.

Actually, tbh, the team I sorta wonder if Heyward would go to are the Braves. No clue if he would waive his NTC, but he was obviously from there and came up in the org. Freddie Freeman is a good friend of his, by most accounts, since they grew up together and came up together in that system. There's not much in the form of salary commitments long term, so there's some financial space. They could use a veteran to work with the kids coming up, and Heyward is a good locker-room guy. Cubs might have to take Kemp back for a couple years, send future money after 2019, and/or send a couple lottery ticket assets, but I do wonder. Again, doubt Heyward gets moved, but I do wonder if that might be a sleeper option.

Maybe Stanton just feels he's lost enough teammates to drinking and driving already.

jesus christ lmao

In my mind, I'm picturing a primary 2019 lineup of:

2B Happ

3B Bryant

CF Harper

LF Stanton

1B Rizzo

C Contreras

LF (beast mode) Schwarber

SS Russell

With Baez and Zobrist available to sub in when we actually want to play defense. Sure, it would be comical in the field. But oh my god that lineup.

It is a pretty iffy move, to say the least. My guess is that they felt expectations had been raised so much that they wanted to get out in front of things, but I suspect many players won't look too fondly on that move. Granted, at the end of the day, money talks. If I'm the Cardinals, I double back and try and get the Marlins talking about Yelich/Ozuna. It makes sense for both sides - Cardinals know what the Marlins like, and Marlins need the pressure on Stanton.

OOC, were there any reports on what the Cardinals were offering? Was busy the last couple weeks, so wondering if I missed it.

Releasing a statement that you couldn't trade for a player seems like such a dick move:

You gotta be a real self-righteous, self-important thinking organization to do this. Lol

I’m still embarrassed by some of my regular season predictions to say this, but I want very little to do with Stanton at that money and those years.

I know we are going to be hopefully printing money in a few years, but there are still only a certain amount of $20 million plus guys on a payroll. I’d rather save the space for a chance at Harper, even though it’s just a chance.

I'd be pretty happy with 1 more World Series and then having the tickets forced to sell.

The best part is that they're telling everyone that nobody wants to play there.

2 left fielders is definitely a bold move but schwarber can use all the help possible out there

As for the Marlins, what now?

Do you trade Stanton and take back scraps from the Dodgers?

The mandate was to try and get payroll down to 90. They've moved Gordon, if someone takes Stanton's contract, you're really close to 90. Granted, the rumors say the Dodgers want to move Kazmir, Gonzalez, and McCarthy in a deal lol.

What's more important to the Marlins? 2018 payroll or total amount of contractual debt?

If its the 2018 payroll, Stanton likely is staying put. If its the latter, he's probably going to LA.

He's put the Marlins in a bad spot. I love it, because they've been stupid thru out this and they deserve it.

But, who do they move, if its not Stanton?

Ziegler? He's making 9 mill and coming off a subpar year. MAYBE you can get a team to take on half the money?

Ozuna? Good as gone. That's 10 mill off their books and it'll net them some very solid prospects too.

Prado has 2/28.5 left and he's coming off a bad year. Would a team pay 2/10 for him now? Figure that's close.

Straily is going to make about 5M. They can get some decent stuff for him most likely.

My guess is that's what they'll move, if they go away from dealing Stanton. They may need to send a prospect or two, in some deals, to try and get the acquiring team to pay a bit more. Or their 2nd Round Comp Pick.

I don't see them dealing Yelich or Realmuto. It makes the franchise look even worse, if they deplete everyone, just to stick it to their franchise player and teach him a lesson.

Ziegler and Prado can be moved, if you attach something positive to them. Ozuna and Straily can net them some good stuff. That's my guess at what they do, now that Stanton has them by the balls.

Woah

On the one hand I love this for us, it really helps our odds of getting Harper next year. Bryce in pinstripes is basically a foregone conclusion amongst the media types.

On the other hand, horsefeathers the Yankees, so I don't want players I really like going to them.

why are yankees fans so in love with greg bird? i'm already seeing them fantasize on twitter about the 2018 lineup by listing stanton, judge, sanchez, and.... bird.

The Yankees and Dodgers are both trying to get the Marlins to eat bad contracts.

It doesn't sound as if either one is offering elite prospects either.

How about this?(using TT's trade as an example, tweaked a bit)

Almora, Tseng, La Stella, Caratini, and Albertos or Ademan for Stanton, 15 mill spread out over first 2 years, Nick Wittgren, and future considerations(meaning their 2nd Round Comp Pick or 2 mill in 2018-2019 IFA money)

This moves Heyward to CF. If they choose Happ instead, I guess Stanton is playing LF. It frees Schwarber up to be dealt for the best value, not necessarily even ML pitching.

That leaves you needing a Starting Pitcher obviously. And you've got to fill 2 bullpen slots, but you've added Wittgren there, which is solid.

C Contreras

1B Rizzo

2B Baez, Zobrist

SS Russell

3B Bryant

LF Schwarber

CF Heyward, Happ

RF Stanton

SP Lester, Quintana, Hendricks, Chatwood

BP Wilson, Edwards, Strop, Montgomery, Grimm, Wittgren, Maples,

You're at 141ish towards the LT, at the time of trade. Leaves you 32-35 mill to spend. That would leave you between 7 and 10 or so, for in-season moves.

Bring Rivera back at 1/2.5. Bring Cameron Maybin or Austin Jackson in at 1/4. Sign Austin Reed at 3/24. Sign Cobb at 4/60. Sign McGee at 3/18. Get Cahill on an incentive laden deal that starts at 1/1.5

Puts you at 177+ insurances towards 197. Not much room for in-season, maybe 5 mill....

But, you look like this....

C Contreras, Rivera

1B Rizzo

2B Baez, Zobrist

SS Russell

3B Bryant

LF Schwarber, Happ

CF Heyward, Maybin

RF Stanton

SP Lester, Quintana, Hendricks, Cobb, Chatwood, Cahill

BP Reed, McGee, Wittgren, Montgomery, Edwards, Strop, Wilson, Grimm, Maples

Why do the Marlins do this? Well, they're stuck lol. We'd be taking on more money than what it looks like the Yankees or Dodgers appear willing to do. And they get a Miami guy in Almora. Plus, they get a solid, cheap 2B in Seal Boy, which they seem to covet in the other rumored deals. Tseng can be successful in a larger park and qualifies as a top 10 prospect from us. Caratini is ML ready and they can find him AB's. Then plug him in fulltime once Realmuto inevitably gets moved. He's also a top 10 guy for us. They also get their choice of the upside of Ademan or Albertos. Who either could be top 100 by mid season.

Takes you out on Bryce though, in any realistic scenario. Just won't carry two separate deals of that magnitude. Don't think any team would.

Assuming the deal doesn't involve, say, Chase Headley/Jacoby Ellsbury (underperforming vets that they don't want), and instead, involves, say, Starlin Castro, plus maybe the Marlins eating more money ... that's about as good a deal as the Marlins could hope for, after Stanton's power play. They can likely flip the remainder of that Castro contract off to another squad (for example ... the Ohtani/Trout Angels could use a 2nd baseman). I still say they could probably use Justin Bour to help facilitate getting rid of some more money.

As for the Yankees, if the deal is as pedestrian, talent and money wise, as it seems right now, it's too good of a move for them to not explore and try to get done. If they can still reset and get below 197 (still possible, although I've got to think David Robertson might be on the move now, and that they'd double down on trying to move Headley/Ellsbury, if they aren't involved in this deal), they still could fit Machado or Harper in there if they got creative.
