I don't think he's not willing to go to the Giants, he just wants to go to the Dodgers more and is trying to drag things out for them to get involved

This. Eventually he will approve to the Giants, just not sure when.

Hopefully it drags out and screws up the rest of the Cardinals' offseason.

Remember when Card's fans were saying that they were ok with their future HOF first baseman bolting for The Anaheim Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim because he wasn't going to be worth the crazy money he was going to get? Pepperidge Farm remembers.

wait but they were right about that

Which makes wanting Giancarlo strange because in about 4 years that contract is going to look just as bad as Pujols' contract.

But those next 3-4 seasons are what the cards and giants are hoping to acquire. I don’t think it’s strange at all.

nah

he's freshly turned 28 and whoever gets him is probably going to get surplus value out of the first few years and money is worth less and less as time goes on, especially in mlb

fwiw, his 2017 fWAR was "worth" $55M on its own.

pujols was 32 and almost immediately bad

The age is the most relevant point there(and there's no LOLing at someone wanting to pursue Stanton), but Pujols was also in a different stratosphere of productivity. Pujols had 8 seasons of 7+ fWAR, Stanton has zero. Stanton is very good, but he carries both performance and injury risk nonetheless.

When Eric Ludwick showed up in the second act, it was a spiritual experience for me. And I know no one irl who would begin to understand the serendipity.

So the Cardinals are probably not getting Stanton, and it honestly has to sting that a top player doesn't want to go there. It seems like Cards fans and writers then want the team to focus on the other Marlins OFs (Yelich and Ozuna) as trade targets.

That raises a couple questions:

A. Why do they think the Marlins are going to move all their best players? Another "fire sale" or however you want to describe it will not go over well with the fanbase and is a bad way to start off for Jeter and company.

B. Are the Cardinals really willing to give up what it will take to trade for Yelich and/or Ozuna? It will be harder than trading for Stanton undoubtedly. A lot of teams are going to be interested in Yelich and Ozuna if they become available.

Don't do this again Marlins. Say NO to a fire......................(sale).

The Marlins owners have no money and have made it clear they are going to get rid of all costly players.

There was a rumor that the Marlins' new ownership approached Stanton to warn him that if he would not accept any trade, virtually all other players of value would be sold off around him. This leads me to believe it might not be a full-on fire sale.

The number being floated around for the Marlins projected target payroll is about 75MM. I'm sure they'd like to keep a couple of good players, at least.

I guess what I am saying here is that if/when Stanton is traded to SF/LAD, it's entirely possible that the fish elect to keep Ozuna and/or Yelich, freezing the Cards out of any of them. Which would be horsefeathering glorious.
