Makes more sense than Ross, I'm down with this.

Also, sucks to be the rule 5 so and so, he's gotta hope a reliever dies in ST now.

If Anderson shows he's healthy in ST I'm fine with him being the 5th starter and Monty starting the year in the pen

If we really like the rule 5 guy, they'll find a way to hide him. The 10 Day DL is going to make roster management more of a skill than a necessity.

Like the Anderson move. Even if its unlikely he gives us more than 10 starts. I seriously doubt we make a move for another guy that is a definite rotation piece. But I do think we'll add another guy or two that has at least started a few games in the majors. And maybe Candelario has a great spring and you can turn him into a dude that's a upper level minor leaguer, with some semblance of potential. If not, we should be able to get to midseason and reassess what kind of pitching we need to add.

I'd much rather reverse that so Montgomery can get acclimated to a starter's workload.

Wait... Brett Anderson isn't even 29 yet? Wtf? I would've guess he's at least 32.

If it goes through, I like it. I rather have Monty be the 5th SP, but he'll be on an innings limit (if Cubs do want him to be a SP for '18 and beyond) so somebody else will have to be the 5th SP for 10-15 starts. Not sure if there's a better option out there besides Hammel or thru trade. I wonder what type of $$$ he's getting and if Cubs get an option year or 2.

Definitely not, Montgomery has to explicitly fail out of the rotation. Otherwise as things stand you're signing yourself up for having 2 incumbent SP after '17 with the benefit being that Anderson is hopefully a small bit better and doesn't have his arm fall off.

I hate to say it, but I'd rather see Montgomery in the pen for the first month or two. He's maxed out around 150 IP in the minors, and only threw 100 IP last year. I'd rather he not be gassed at the end of the season when things actually matter -- it's not like we're projected to actually need him to win the division outright.

Give Anderson the 5th SP gig out of spring training. Let him start while he's healthy. If by some miracle all of our starters are still healthy and effective when Montgomery is ready to transition back to starting, we can explore using a six man rotation or trading Anderson.

I like it. It makes sense and it adds depth. I'm not really counting on anything, but it's a nice flyer. And on a one-year deal, I like him a lot more than Ross. I still want Monty starting, though. I want him to take a rotation spot and run with it. It would help us so much when looking forward.

I'm not super worried on that front, but if that's a concern, then just go to a 6 man rotation right away. You'll still have 7 relievers in the pen and everyone wins. Anderson gets to pitch without an injury elsewhere, and Montgomery gets his workload managed.
