Well the silver lining to not signing Harper is that he's really stumbled out of the gate in Philly. I mean a 1.284 OPS is bad, right?

If you're Jon Lester it is.

Seeing this thread bumped, knowing what it was going to be about, and still reading it is the very definition of being a Cubs fan now. God it sucks ass.

Has an owner ever gone from beloved to absolutely loathed as fast as the Ricketts have managed to? It's amazing how fast this franchise has gone from in the tank to amazing to back in the tank.

Wait, people saw that Bryce signed for 13/$330 and were upset the Cubs didn’t do that?

Even setting aside those who don’t think the Cubs should remotely care about payroll, yes they absolutely should have done that.

Reasonable people can disagree! I guess we can reevaluate whether it was worth it in 2031.

Every dollar in Bryce's account is a dollar not in PTR's account. No need to wait for 2031.

I wanted Harper as much as anybody, but looking back now, it's hard to feel that bad about missing out on an outfielder whose peak appears to be 4.5 WAR and required a 13 year contract.

How is your life as a cubs fan better without bryce on the team

yeah i mean if you say well the cubs passed on harper because they thought acuna was a better investment, sure. but they passed on harper and their big signings since then are descalso and austin romine and it looks like it will be multiple offseasons before we are FA players again. so i'd prefer the universe where we signed harper.

I love Bryce Harper. I don’t think I’ll say the same when he’s 34, coming off of a 2.5 war season with like 4/$100m+ left. He’s only fun because he’s good.

I’d love for payroll to be $1b annually, too, but in a world where that won’t happen, I’d prefer to not have my team be hamstrung by this kind of deal.
