So Zobrist and Heyward both played the same day the Bryce agreed with the Phillies? Maybe whatever the Cubs were trying to do fell through and they said "Sorry Bryce".

Sorry forgot to take this damn tin foil hat off!

Yeah I mentioned that too. It's certainly possible it was just a coincidence but I really want to believe the Cubs were taking one last stab. That said, I feel like even if the Cubs were really good at not leaking info, if the Cubs were talking to one or more teams in a last gasp attempt to clear space, I feel like we would have heard at least some rumblings.

Bryce is smart enough to know the world is going to burn to a crisp by 2030 and he needs all the money he can get so he can comfortably live on Mars when the time comes to abandon all the normies on Earth.

i cant believe there's no opt outs. there's gonna be a strike and then a new cba and $25 mil is gonna be next to nothing. Imagine if LeBron had signed a decade long 25m a year contract before the last CBA, he'd be passing up on $15 million per year. Just insane.

I kind of see it the other way. If the owners give anything at all in the next CBA, it's going to be the ability to make more money early at the expense of making money later, so even a guy like Harper probably isn't seeing 25M-ish per year in his mid-30s if something like that comes to pass.

In 10 years, his AAV won’t be in the top 50 in the league

I'd take that bet

It's only the 14th highest AAV NOW....you don't think there will be 36 higher valued contracts in the next 10 years? Especially after a new CBA?

How many of those 14 will still be current 10 years from now?

I'm late to the thread, but are the Cubs still gonna have final chance to match?

I'm still putting the odds at around 5% that we will sign him.

I should have said "historically", not "currently". Either way, with Bryant, Judge, Syndergaard, DeGrom, Trout, etc., etc. etc. all getting paid soon, Harper's AAV is going to look less and less impressive moving forward. But hey, maybe the total dollar amount is all he and Boras cared about
